hey guys welcome to a special need space
fun channel my name is Chris and this is
Astro my rabbit and this is a video
about how to cut your rabbit's nails
cutting your rabbit's nails can be
really daunting especially when a lot of
the videos out there showing rabbits
that are very docile and timid and
they're totally okay with having their
owner cut their nails I know that not
every rabbit is like that especially
from my personal experience Astro is a
very feisty rabbit I know that he may
not look like that right now he's very
calm and sleepy but when it comes down
to getting his nails it definitely is
like war has started in the household
you know the first thing that you're
gonna need is proper nail clippers for a
pet you can pick them up very cheaply at
any pet store they're gonna look like
this please don't use nail clippers that
you would use on yourself
second thing that you're gonna need is a
bright light like a lamp a flashlight
anything that's gonna be able to help
you see the quick the quick is a nerve
ending that has the blood supply in the
rabbits toe that's connected to the nail
the longer that you go without cutting
your rabbit's nail the more that the
quick is going to grow and so it's going
to become harder to cut your rabbit's
nails and you want to be really diligent
with cutting your rabbit's nails because
it can cause injuries if they do get too
long third thing is going to be having a
partner I know this can be really
annoying especially if you live alone
but I find it is the easiest way to cut
your rabbit's nails we set up a little
station at our desk area I have a bright
lamp there so I turn it on before I get
there I grab my nail clippers and I have
the chair ready and then I let my
boyfriend know it's time to pick Astro
up and then what he does is sits down
with Astro you don't want to be standing
and doing this like you definitely want
to be close to the ground as possible
just in case your rabbit does get out of
your grip and that way
you're not dropping your rabbit from a
high height and it's also gonna scare
them if they're having their nails
trimmed when you're standing because
they don't like being held here and it
does get easier the more that you do it
and and i also recommend just taking a
little bit off at a time until you feel
safer and more secure in your judgement
gonna include a video that i captured at
my vet
he gives us advice on how to cut the
nails properly and especially if you
have a rabbit that has dark nails that's
this way you'll be able to see the quick
because it hasn't been done for a while
right his girl he's being liked so much
better when you hold him actually is
going crazy when we cut his this one
almost looks like it's growing on all
the way but we don't really have an
option because we need to trim low so
I'm gonna cut a little bit okay it might
bleed okay
same thing this one's a little easier to
see quick turnovers that so you got most
of that it's very different in the color
we just take off like to the tiniest
amount it's just I mean you just do it
comfortable with and then as you start
to get more and more comfortable because
the thing is if they get too long like
this they can get caught mm-hmm and then
they can get some pretty nasty injuries
from not too
after you're done trimming your rabbits
nails it's a good idea to give it a
little treat Stroh likes to hide under
the couch for a good hour after a nail
trimming because he's pretty grumpy with
us basically all you need to know - how
to properly trim your rabbit's nails and
I hope that it goes smoothly
