On this week's 2 minute tip we're cutting okra.
On a previous video, we showed you how we
Transplant our okra in spring to get a jumpstart on the production and to start having okra super early in that video
I also told you about these two really productive okra varieties that we carry the jambalaya and the red burgundy and
Even though I've grown these for many years
I'm still amazed every year at how early these things start producing and how prolific they are
Once they start producing these plants behind me here about knee to thigh high currently
but they started producing okra pods when they were only about a foot tall and
Since then they've been really prolific and we've been getting really solid harvest
About every other day and today I want to show you a new technique
I've been using this year to cut my okra that's made things a lot easier to get in there and harvest it every other day
Keep it nice and clean keep the weeds out and just keep it more manageable
So here's a nice little jambalaya pod. That's ready to harvest
And instead of cutting it off right below the pod right here
What I'm going to do is I'm actually going to cut the pod and this lateral branch, too
And what that's going to do is that's going to keep the bottom of this plant nice and clean
And it's going to make it easy for me to see my okra when I'm out here picking it
So I'll just take my pruners and I'll cut it right there and then we'll just drop that leaf on the ground
We've got our nice little okra pod there
here's another pod that's ready to harvest and this is a red burgundy plant here and you can even see down here where I've
Harvested it before and cut this lateral stem so it doesn't hurt the plant at all
It's just going to keep everything nice and neat. So instead of cutting it right here. We're gonna go right here
Cut that off and get our nice little okra pod there on this plant here
You can see where it's already been harvested many times. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven
Probably eight times. So this has been a really productive plant even though it's only about knee-high
But by cutting that lateral stem it makes it really easy to find our okra pods
We don't have to look very hard for them because they're always right here at the top
It's also going to make it really easy to keep everything nice and clean
Underneath our plant so we can get in here and we can pull these weeds out of here really easily
Keep everything nice and weeded nice and neat
So we've got some really healthy okra plants that aren't competing with a lot of weeds down here and they're producing really really well
So when you're harvesting your okra go ahead and cut that lateral stem. That's right below the okra pod
That's going to keep them plants nice and neat and clean. Gonna make it easier for you
See the okra pods when you're out there harvesting it
It's also gonna make it easier to work around your plants keep the weeds down and keep everything nice and neat
I'll put some links below to both of these great okra varieties here the jambalaya and the red burgundy
There's still plenty of time to get you a nice crop of these guys planted. I hope you enjoyed this week's 2 minute tip
We'll see you next week.
