your four month old should be sleeping
or napping every one and a half to two
and a half hours throughout the day so
this is one of the best tips that I have
and I'll go over tips in just a minute
but one of the best tips in one of the
best recommendations I have for you is
to let your baby sleep often because
your baby really needs to your 4 month
old should be taking about 3 to 4 nuts
every day and it really just depends on
how long the naps are what's most
important is not how long your baby naps
but how often your baby naps so as long
as you're giving your little in the
appropriate wait tons of one and a half
to two and a half hours then that's more
important than that he's taking longer
naps your four month olds night sleep
should be about 9 to 11 hours at night
now I don't mean 9 to 11 hours straight
if he is that's amazing but for the
majority of 9:1 for the majority of 4
month olds it's too soon and they're not
able to sleep this long at night bedtime
for the 4 month old really depends on
how many naps they're taking and also
how many hours of sleep they're really
ready for at night in general you want
the 4 month old sped tone to be a little
bit later you don't necessarily want to
have a 7:00 p.m. bedtime for your 4
month old because that means they may
tweak a really early and want to start
their day really really early so I
usually say for a 4 month old any time
between a 9 maybe even 9:30 p.m. is
pretty realistic given that your little
ones only gonna sleep 92 11 hours at
night now if you have to wake up super
early to get to work or to go to daycare
and you need your little one to wake up
at 6 a.m. or even a bit earlier then you
want to move bedtime earlier to give
your four month old than 9 to 11 hours
of sleep that they need at night as far
as night waking this goes on average
your 4 month old should be expected to
have 2 night feeds so when we say night
waking is really mean night feeds so how
many times your baby should need to feed
during the night it's anywhere from 1 to
3 times a night but we can have an
average of about twice per night which
would normally mean that your little one
could go 4 or 5 hours between
feeds overnight and that's of course
assuming that your baby's growth and
weight gain or great that your doctor is
completely pleased with your baby's
growth and that there's no nutritional
concerns or feeding concerns that your
baby's you know eating well growing well
and everybody's happy if you're maybe
has feeding issues or growth issues then
you really want to speak to your doctor
first and ask them about how long do you
think my baby could go overnight in
between feet total sleep for your four
month old should fall anywhere from 14
to 15 hours give or take an hour or so
so that's when you're adding up maps and
nighttime sleep on average when looking
at like a weekly picture on average my
baby slept anywhere from 14 15 maybe
even 16 hours a day
the first tip that I have for you is to
begin a peaceful nightly ritual for your
baby and a peaceful nightly ritual is
really just a series of activities that
you do every evening that set the scene
for relaxation and that get your baby
used to relaxing and settling down and
falling asleep at the same time every
evening
now the second big tip I have to help
your four-month-old sleep well is to
really stick to those one and a half to
two and a half hour awake times that I
just talked about the most important
thing for your young baby is that he
sleeps often because we want to prevent
your baby from becoming overtired when
babies become overtired they really
become wired and overstimulated and
really really hard to settle down now if
you're home with your baby all day long
and you're quite a routine lover or
quite vigilant about watching the clock
what you could do is you could have the
shortest oh wait tons be in the morning
and they can slowly get longer as the
day progresses if that's too much for
you to keep up with you could just stick
with the same awake time throughout the
day so to say two hours and I'll watch
my baby sleepy signs and if he seems a
bit sleepy a bit earlier I'll get him
down earlier you could do something like
that which is a lot easier you know a
lot simpler to follow if your baby goes
to daycare or is with a nanny it's a lot
easier to tell them okay go for two
hours between naps and just watch for
sleepy signs what I would definitely
recommend for all night sleep
and for naps where your baby is at home
is to start playing white noise so play
a white noise all night long and play it
during that time when your baby's at
home and to also make sure that you
darken your baby's bedroom really well
you really want to prevent that morning
light from coming in your baby's window
which will definitely make him wake
earlier the best recommendation I have
for you is to work on how he falls
asleep at bedtime and if he's falling
asleep in his bed more and more on his
own then this will help him
automatically sleep longer stretches
he'll really only wake up and call out
for you and the night when he's hungry
because otherwise he'll be able to
settle himself so what I recommend that
you do is you get your Betty baby ready
for sleep so you do your bedtime routine
and you feed him and he's got a clean
diaper and he's nice and cozy and you
put him in his bed when he's trowels but
not yet not yet falling asleep so
ideally his eyes wouldn't be closed yet
and you want to put him in his bed and
then you're gonna do however much
hands-on and you have to do to have him
be okay with being in his bed falling
asleep and then what you want to do is
every night you just want to do this a
little bit less every night you want to
be really gradual wean off of your
hands-on support whatever method you
decide on let's say you decide to rock
your baby's body gently side to side
then you want to stick with that method
and every time he wakes on a night you
want to feed him when he's hungry and
burp him and then put him back in the
bed to fall asleep in the bed on his own
and then you just give the same hands-on
assistance and again every night you
just do a little bit less and a little
bit less and a little bit less until
he's used to it and what you could do if
you want to slowly start reducing your
baby's night fees again I think four
month olds do still need to feed at
night but you can work to a pattern that
you think works well for your baby maybe
is waking and feeding every four hours
maybe it's every five or even every six
after you speak to your doctor and your
doctor gives you their opinion on it
then what you want to do is you could
start by saying okay I'm only gonna feed
my little one every three hours in the
night when he wakes so what you'll do is
if you wakes and it's been three hours
or more than you can feed him and burp
oh and
and go back to the method that you used
at bedtime to help them fall asleep if
it's been less than three hours then you
just want to go straight to the method
that you used at bedtime and this is a
really slow and gentle way of getting
his stomach and his body used to eating
a little bit less often at night and
he'll make up for that nutrition
tomorrow when he wakes up he will have
gotten a little bit less milk at night
so then he'll be a bit hungry or
tomorrow and you just make sure that
you're offering him feeds frequently
throughout the day to help him
compensate for that let me know if you
have any more questions you can post
them under this video and I'll be happy
to follow up with this
