"How To Think" by Alan Jacobs | Book Thoughts | Episode 2

this week I read how to think by Allen

Jacobs I thought it was a an interesting

topic to explore to talk about because

the name of the business is training

think-tank and I've noticed a lot of

times just from the series of questions

we've put up on Instagram that there's

an assumption about what that means that

is different about what I intended when

I termed it so I pulled some quotes from

this that I thought were really relevant

to the fitness market really relevant to

training really relevant to what I'm

trying to do with regards to building my

business and I thought it'd be a cool

concept to explore a book that is

traditionally not thought of as training

literature like usually we read books

about actual training and this is about

thought in general

alright let's get started so much has

gone wrong in so many ways with such

devastating consequences for selves and

societies still worse those who believe

they are impeccably thoughtful turn out

to be some of the worst offenders

against good sense so this to me

epitomizes the fitness industry just in

general we're the most trained most

researched most dieted culture of I mean

of recorded history and we're continuing

to get less healthy over time so there's

got to be something wrong with the

approach to thinking about how we're

doing these things and I think that's

true in a lot of sporting disciplines as

well people produce one person and then

it's like okay well this is the way that

it's done and then they keep using that

method over and over and over again and

it doesn't really go anywhere and I

think it's very easy to kind of get

wrapped in and what was working in the

past or in what's popular just in

general so you're gonna see that kind of

theme coming in in a lot of the quotes

that I pulled up similarly people in my

line of work always say that we want to

promote critical thinking but really we

want our students to think critically

only about what they've learned at home

and in church not about what they learn

from us so obviously that quote is more

about just like the educational

institution in academia but I find that

very true with regards to gurus in the

markets somebody comes out with an idea

and they want to show you how to

critically think about what another

person is doing or what they're

promoting or being trying to teach you

how to be anti something else so hey I'm

gonna teach you how to be anti paleo

create this do out duality and then have

you on the other end of it be extremely

high carb because it's just so easy for

our minds to see things in black and

white or in you know this thing or the

other thing and that kind of gray area

in between is a much harder thing to

sell it's something that I've just

in general that my ideas aren't very

concrete and like okay this works or

this doesn't work so just in general I

think it's a good thing for people to

critically think critically think about

everything that I say critically think

about everything that you think

critically think about your own beliefs

critically think about what's popular in

the market and as you do that you refine

your beliefs over time you refine your

methods over time I think it just

creates better long-term progress in

general

finally one doctor asked some probing

questions and discovered that I had had

four before the pains began lingering

heavy cough it seems that coughing had

strained a muscle in my chest and that

the source of the pain and when I

started worrying about it the resulting

anxiety tensed the muscle and increased

the pain which led to more anxiety it

was the classic visit vicious circle of

reinforcement when I asked the doctor

what treatment he thought best he

replied the diagnosis is the treatment

that one is really interesting to me I

think it piggybacks on the last book

about back problems where there's a ton

of research and a ton of people that are

spinal surgeons talking about the

psychosomatic influence of back pain and

just in general it feels like a lot of

our approach to the human body has lost

its common sense that a lot of times

it's the way people are thinking about

their issues that's the problem and not

the issues and the symptomatic profiles

that we're looking at on a regular basis

if you want to think but you are going

to have to shrink that hypertrophic

instinct for consensus but given the

power of that instinct it is extremely

unlikely that you dear reader are

willing to go to that trouble that

instinct for consensus is magnified and

intensified in our era because we deal

with the wild torrent of what claims to

be information but is often nonsense I

don't think I need to elaborate on that

too much there are so many people out

there that are

or who haven't done anything have no

history and training no history and

sport no history and coaching people

that put their information out there and

and they because of the way the Internet

is structured they have a platform to

speak whereas back in you know maybe

earlier culture you had to kind of earn

that platform you had to earn your right

before people started watching your

ideas but now it's so easy to get it out

and there's so much of it in such an

abundant format that people aren't buy

by the process of competitiveness weeded

out if their ideas aren't good so it's

something that you need to constantly be

worried about or constantly be thinking

about that just because something is a

popular idea in our current culture does

not mean that it is necessarily a good

idea or something that's going to lead

to long-term success with regards to

training or sport performance or

nutrition and diet profiles academics

have always been afflicted with by an

unusually high levels of conformity to

expectations one of the chief of ways

you prove yourself worthy of an academic

life is by getting very good grades and

you don't get very good grades without

saying the sorts of things that your

professors like to hear this is a

something I bust a lot of people's chops

with I think I was I was called smart a

lot of times in school because I got

good grades but I was not really a good

student and I had a bunch of friends

that would say like oh he's smart and I

would ask well what do you mean by smart

because there's a ton of different

theories about what intellect is in

general and I think we get lost in the

oh I have a PhD or I have a master's in

this or I did this and then that in and

of itself makes you an authority and I

think over the course of just

experiencing life and experiencing the

fitness market I've realized that it

seems that there's an over-reliance on

what people call evidence-based science

with regards to their prescriptions in

terms of exercise and in terms of

nutrition and I'm not opposed to that

because that is a big part of what we do

we have subscriptions to a lot of

research reviews and a lot of the

current research that comes out so that

we could vet our ideas however that's

the not the only thing that we think

governs high-level thought in terms of

how do we select methods or whose

information are we going to listen to

and I think it's something that I would

like to as a culture and training

think-tank continue to promote that we

have people that were X athletes that we

have people that are coming from

academia we have people that come from a

movement background we have people that

come from a sport background and each

one of those independently coming

together to build a group of people that

think is more powerful than anybody with

their individual profile of experience

that helps them govern what smart is for

them Freed's that's a name this guy's

name is freed had effectively stopped

listening he heard something he didn't

agree with and immediately entered

refutation mode and in refutation mode

there's no listening moreover when

there's no listening there is no

thinking to enter refutation mode is to

say in effect that you've already done

all the thinking you need to do that no

further information for reflection is

required that one just triggered a

thought as I went out and I know in my

earlier Moore kind of aggressive days I

would go out to a lot of educational

stuff and I would listen somebody would

piss me off or say something that I

completely thought was wrong and I would

immediately write them off and that they

had nothing to offer me I was you know I

had to figure it out they were an idiot

and ironically as I started building my

own platform and going out and teaching

and I started seeing that trait in other

people and I was like wow

I don't want to be like that's really

holding me back it's really really

making it difficult to have a dialogue

about hey what's the appropriate

training method you do it this way I do

it this way maybe we're both right maybe

it both works in our own separate

environments and that way of just being

combative all the time it's almost

turned into like everybody wants to

argue instead of having discussion and

that was something that I was trying to

kill at

in the creation of my business the name

training think tank was like bring a

group of people that were gonna come

together and think together not try to

fight to see who was right and who was

wrong just all working together towards

one singular goal over time and so far

it's been a pretty successful way of

doing things people are attracted to the

ideas of people they are attracted to

but it's hard to go much farther while

speaking in general mode for some the

attraction of the new people will be

that they seem smart for others but

they're rich or beautiful I mean that

one's like perfect for the fitness

industry I think a lot of athletes are

really happy that they have their

platforms to to get their ideas out or

so that their lives are listened to but

what they don't realize is that they're

at the top of the dominance hierarchy in

terms of how they look everyone looks up

to them because they look a certain way

but that's a very very transient thing

in most people's lives I mean most

people somewhere between 20 and 30

you're kind of at your peak of

attractiveness and then there's a always

a younger newer hotter higher performing

thing that's coming behind you in

somebody else's body and if that's the

reason that you're attracting people to

you and that's the platform that you

have that's something dangerous that you

need to consider that you're cultivating

other skills that are gonna kind of last

the test of time as your biology starts

to deteriorate a little bit and for

people that are looking up to those

people that's something that you have to

kind of self reflect on is am i

listening to this person because I

genuinely think that their experience

their knowledge base and everything that

they have to offer is something that's

going to make me better or is there just

in something in my subconscious that I

think they're sexy and I'd like to be

with them in my fantasies so I'm gonna

listen to them because I'm attracted

that's something that I think people

need to go through in the fitness

industry because really in the end of

the day most people are selecting their

fitness profile or the fitness program

to look a certain way or to perform a

certain way and you know the whole look

good naked concept and if you're gonna

listen to people most people are

listening or listening to the people

that they think look good

but that might not necessarily be the

optimal path or strategy for most people

to go down he came to see about his

misery the disturbing truth that the

habit of analysis has a tendency to wear

away the feelings when no other mental

habit is cultivated and the analyzing

spirit remains without its natural

compliments and correctives

and the wearing away of feelings weather

was a great and complex loss that one

was more personal for me I think I went

for so long in my life trying to

overanalyze everything and try to figure

things out with my intellect and

quantify it and figure out in the sport

of CrossFit pacing methods that were

based on numbers split times and

constantly getting lost in the

performance because the sport in and of

itself was measured through the

stopwatch but I realized over time that

that was taking away something really

potent and valuable inside of somebody's

whole emotional system so it was a big

realization and a shift that I started

focusing a little bit less on the

science and more on the environment and

more on the people and trying to

cultivate an environment that brought

all of those things together to make

stronger more capable athletes that

understood that there's more to it than

we can perceive with our eyes or

perceive with a stopwatch or perceive

with a camera and I think it's an

important thing because we have a

tendency to self-select information

based on what our natural tendency of

thought is and for me I'm probably a

little bit more naturally analytical so

it was very easy for me to fall down

that rabbit hole and keep getting more

and more and more analytical until I

realized oh wow this is holding me back

so that was kind of a personal one I

wanted to add in I think because I have

so many engineers and scientists and we

are running Moxie tests and we use a

different language people assume that

that's all that we do and that's all

that we think about but I think it's a

very damaging way to think about

training by overanalyzing it or over

quantifying it there's an emotional

component to it that is a huge huge and

powerful motivator that drives people to

do some pretty incredible things

smart people have a problem especially

when you put them in large groups that

problem is an ability to convincingly

rationalize nearly everything that one's

pretty straightforward and I think the

the popular group of people that

generally is at the forefront of the

fitness movement health industry it's

very cliquey a lot of people they get

together they talk about their ideas

they're really smart and they have a

tendency to make themselves convince

themselves that they are right and I

know I fall into that trap all the time

you know it's it's a it's a shitty

feeling to think about your actions and

what you're doing and your training

programs and analyze them in a negative

way so if I look back at my programs

retroactively Lee there's this part of

my mind as I'm looking at my own

programs that's justifying all the

decisions that I made somebody gets hurt

and you look back and you're like well

it can't be this this or this it had to

have been something they're doing in the

outside or it's too complicated and it's

just so easy to write things off and not

take that pressure on yourself so it's a

it's a dangerous thing to be in a

position that you're speaking in general

and I think by me even doing this video

talking about thinking it's gonna hold

me accountable to a higher standard

because I'm putting it out there that

this is what I'm trying to do and this

is how I'm trying to think and that I'm

trying not to get stuck in my own

rationalizations or my own coach's way

of thinking and I it is just a trap that

you can fall into if you get a bunch of

people that are really good at talking

their ideas out it's easy to start

talking together and get stuck in

groupthink and be like oh well we're

right and everybody else is wrong this

is what thinking is not the decision

itself but what goes into the decision

the consideration the assessment it's

testing your own responses and weighing

the available evidence its grasping as

best you can and with all available and

relevant senses what is and it's also

speculating as carefully and responsibly

as you can about what might be and it's

knowing when

not to go it alone and whom you should

ask for help remember doing a podcast a

little while back where somebody was

talking about my my business leadership

they were asking how I run my business

and I was saying there was a part of my

business I think I was talking about it

peril that I had no idea about I didn't

know what you know what we're doing or

how the shirt sales work or anything and

he was kind of like shocked at that

thought that I was running my business

but there were aspects of my business

that I just had no idea about and that

is something that I take a lot of pride

in in my own business that I try to do

all the things that I think I'm the best

fit for in my business and outsource

those other things and I think that in

and of itself is the process of thinking

I don't think you can think

independently you have to do it with

other people and you have to have other

people to leverage their skills where

you're weak in general and that is true

with regards to athletic performance as

well it really does take a village to

build a high level athlete and they need

to have a support structure of massage

therapists people who are emotional

support people are writing training

designs people who are doing technical

work and independently no one person can

solve that equation it has to be a kind

of team-based environment that's

something that we're trying to build

here where a different coaches involved

with different part of the team training

and there's an oversight of one athlete

with one coach and a global program and

then massage therapy that's layered on

top of it and I think independent I

think independently each one of those

people would be a poor coaching platform

for each athlete but together as a

community it allows an environment that

hopefully can cultivate high level

performers and that leverages into this

next quote to think independently of

other human beings is impossible and if

it were possible it would be undesirable

thinking is necessarily thoroughly and

wonderfully social everything you think

is a response to what someone else has

thought and said and when people commend

someone for

thinking for themselves they usually

mean ceasing to sound like people I

dislike and starting to sound more like

people I approve of I think that is I'm

just an awesome quote I think it is it's

true that thinking is social discussions

are social bouncing ideas off other

people is an enjoyable process and can

make you get out of your own head which

is a valuable way to upgrade your own

methods of training upgrade your own

ways of thinking understand how some

other people experience things and you

generally tend to find people that you

have a similar way of thinking about

things like and that can be a very

dangerous place to be in in your own

mind when you're only surrounded by

people that you agree with it's a really

cool thing to find friends and find

people that you can vibe with that

you're extremely different from and I

think that is the real benefit of

building what we've built here is that

we have so many different styles of

people so many different ways of

thinking different religious views and

that allows us to kind of relate to

different experiences and think about

okay where's this athlete coming from

and which one of my friends can I go to

that can kind of help me understand this

person so I can write an effective plan

for them this is a profoundly unhealthy

situation it's unhealthy because it

prevents us from recognizing others as

our neighbors even when they are quite

literally our neighbors if I'm consumed

by disbelief that the person over there

is both other and repugnant I may never

discover that my favorite television

program is also his favorite television

program that we like some of the same

books though not for precisely the same

reasons that we both know what it's like

to nurse a loved one through a long

illness all of which is to say that I

may all to easily forget the political

and social and religious differences are

not the whole human experience that one

that one mine might be a little bit more

philosophical about society but I find

this

is so true in athletics the best of the

best a lot of times cultivate their

performance in a place of hate and it

takes them a really long time to mature

to realize that the reason they are good

is because their competitors are good

enough to bring the best out of

themselves and that was an important

part of what I was trying to do when I

was building the training group and when

I brought Noah on board and spoke to

Travis about having a training partner

who was as good or better than you at

certain things would bring the level of

competition up and that being

brothers-in-arms is a better way of

having a long-term training career than

hating everyone and thinking of them as

taking away everything that you want

that is a very isolated way of trying to

live and when this guy says it is a

profoundly unhealthy situation I

genuinely agree with that I think the

more you separate yourself from other

people the more you try to become

superior to them the less you're trying

to make connections with people in

general you're going to make yourself

more isolated more depressed more

neurotic about your behaviors and how

you need to control everything and I

don't think that is a healthy way of

existing I think you would see it in

hormonal profiles I think you would see

it in bloodwork I think you would see it

in salivary testing I think you would

see it if a psychologist or a

sociologist were to talk to the person

and try to make some sort of subjective

subjective determination of health and I

think it's something that I'm really

trying to do a good job of with athletes

is allowing them to understand that

their athletic career is not this thing

that exists in their life it's just a

part of somebody's life journey and if

that athletic career that window of time

however long it is three years five

years 10 years 11 years is something

that they look back on and regret

because they didn't make friends and

connections and things that leverage

them into the next stages of their life

that's going to be a big part of their

life that they feel like they wasted and

I think that only can be prevented by

thinking about athletics as a

place where you can connect with other

people and where you can grow as a human

being outside of just training

performance numbers or outside of just

money or metals or whatever it is that

drives people's desire for glory so this

next series of quotes is that these were

all personal ones I thought I would

share and try to like I don't know maybe

express some vulnerability and things

that I learned specifically so I'll get

started with those and to remind us that

all of us at various times in our lives

believe true things for poor reasons and

false things for good reasons and that

whatever we think we know whether we are

right or wrong arises from our

interactions with other human beings

thinking independently solitarily for

ourselves is not an option that's

something I just you know it kind of

hits home and makes me realize there are

so many times in my life that I was so

sure of myself only to find life to show

me that I had no idea what I was talking

about or other times where I I believed

something and I believed it because it

made me feel superior and then after I

was exposed through the course of life

that in fact was believing something

that I do still think is true I really

resented who I was and why I was

believing it in the first place I think

a lot of people will probably go through

that in the course of their lives and

it's a good reminder for me as I grow

that I shouldn't hold too tightly on to

my beliefs because life is going to

change me my experiences are going to

change me my training experiences are

gonna change me my aging is gonna change

me and then each time I'm changed and I

look back on my life I'm gonna look back

at those decisions that those

experiences with a different lens of

perception because I'm really and

fundamentally a different human being as

I live a longer life so I think that's

something that just hit home and really

resonated with some of the things that

I've been thinking about as I've been

trying to build this business true

membership is a fellowship of people who

are not so much like minded as like

hearted

that's something that I find really

funny because I call that I called the

business training think tank but if you

come to the organization you find out

that people don't actually think the

same way here we have people who are

like hardcore scientists and then we

have people who are hardcore like

pragmatic thinkers like does this work

if it doesn't work I don't want to even

look at it I don't need to justify

whether or not it works I want you to

show me that it works then we have

people who are super emotionally driven

with regards to how they deal with

people and how they interact and I

realized over time that I'm not trying

to create a group of people who all

think the same way but I am trying to

create a group of people that all feel

the same way about what we are trying to

build we're trying to build an

organization that will build a platform

for athletes that will redefine health

in the fitness market that will create

professional jobs for people in the

fitness market and those are the things

that I think are holding all of these

people together that all have very

different ways of thinking about

training or thinking about life or

thinking about nutrition and I thought

it's a really cool way to to illustrate

that and it's something I never really

thought about because I'm probably not

super emotional in general with regards

to just life alright next you were

vulnerable to changes of your own mind

in changing your mind could yield a

different you so that piggybacks off

that first quote that I put in this

reminding me of myself I genuinely think

as you live life you actually become a

different person and there is research

to support that they took studies of

people when they were in their 20s and

in their 70s of subjective personality

studies and when they went and reviewed

those cases they realized that the

people in their 70s were actually

fundamentally different human beings

than when they were in their 20s and

that's hard for me to conceptualize

because the it you know it's the same

body and I know that a lot of life is

like is this so if you asked me who max

is like there's a big part of it's like

this big bald dude these are my hands

this is my body this is Who I am

that comes with me throughout the course

of my whole life but the aspects of

ourselves that we don't see our thoughts

our emotions are genuinely gonna change

over time and I've seen that happen in

my own training views I've seen it

happen in my views about people who are

close to me you know I

there were times in my life where I

hated certain people and then given

enough time I look back and I'm like I

don't really hate that person I you know

I had a lot of value from that

relationship and that fluctuation of

feelings over time is a strange thing

because it really is a reflection that

you're changing as a human being I can

hear a little voice piping from the deep

recesses of my skull did you speak your

hearts truth did you merely seek to

please self-knowledge

is hard that one's just straightforward

I think my own my own desire to

understand myself has been a very

painful process and I constantly have

this critic in my mind that's evaluating

things even as I talk and I create

content I wonder am i doing this to try

to create an audience or am i doing this

because of the things that I say I'm

passionate about to try to build

training think-tank and that constant

self-reflection and self-evaluation is a

is a painful process as you try to

figure out who you are I think a lot of

people are gonna go through that as

their as their questing to become better

athletes or as they're making their

health decisions like people go out to

eat and are they making their food

decisions because they genuinely think

those food decisions are healthy for

them or because they think that the

other people at the table are going to

perceive them as healthy in their food

choices and then that makes them feel

better and those are two fundamentally

different things but it's hard to kind

of go through that evaluation process on

yourself but I do think it's something

that's necessary so you can get down to

how do you want to live what

relationship do you want to have with

food do you want to be able to eat out

with your family or go out to a

fast-food restaurant just because it

tastes good and you want it or is that

something that you genuinely think is

going to impact your health long-term or

is it go

to impact your performance and I think

digging down into those fundamental

values is a is a is a little bit of a

painful process but it does yield a lot

of long-term benefits something similar

happens when you try out someone else's

vocabulary you experience the world from

within that mode of describing it with a

new set of termina stick screens and

some things you're used to seeing

disappear from view while new and

different ones suddenly become visible

that to me is like I mean it's amazing

and it's a complicated way of describing

that the language that you use dictates

how you think and see the think about

and see the world and I find that every

time I sit down with Kyle and Evan as

we're designing the courses and both of

them are probably more scientifically

minded than me and we go into describing

training in scientific terms and we talk

about cardiac physiology and respiratory

physiology and we start going down that

rabbit hole then as I go out from those

meetings and I go out on the training

floor that's what I'm seeing I'm seeing

elevated respiration patterns I'm seeing

people sweating and thinking about okay

what's the level of excitement and

arousal that they have and I start to

actually think in a different language

than I would normally think in and if I

were just hanging out with a group of

athletes which happens and when I hang

out with Travis and when I hang out with

Noah then I think about training in

terms of well who's going faster who's

winning and those that's the language

that I use to describe what I'm seeing

and it's a really cool thing to be able

to jump into a bunch of different social

groups and then be able to evaluate

training and be able to evaluate your

you know health and food choices through

a different lens of perception which i

think is a valuable thing for me because

I've been able to try so many different

things and I've been very comfortable

learning from different groups and

communities of people and I think that's

something that I try to instill in my

culture and we have a really good time

just trying to bring a bunch of

different

groups of people together and see like

well what comes out of it when you take

somebody like this and somebody like

this and put them together and have a

conversation what comes out of that it's

been a really cool sociological

experiment but we absolutely must

remember what those taxonomy czar

temporary provisional intellectual

structure whose relevance will not

always be what it is or seems to be

today this is a marketing problem that

I've had my my entire business

development life experience I remember

when we sat down to write the courses

I'm so fired up about creating new

courses and delivering them in different

ways and upgrading them and having Chris

to make them more professional and I'm

like okay we're gonna crush this like

I've taken a bunch of stuff in the

market I've been a big consumer of this

let's make it better than that but I

have this massive underlying fear that

I'm gonna create Dogma and then I'm

gonna stop people from being able to

learn because I know that all the

content and everything that's in there

is a temporary construct of how we're

gonna think for the next couple of years

as we experiment and create new ideas

and upgraded methods and then want to

create it over time and I'm always

worried that if people lose touch with

where we are now and we move forward

that they're gonna look back and isolate

the way that or think about the way that

we think as this isolated block of

information that we put out and so that

was just a really interesting thing for

me that put me a little bit at peace

with regards to selling because all ways

of thinking have to create temporary

ways of explaining it but as we get

better over time then we have to realize

that those ways of thinking and

explaining things before we're necessary

then but we can burn them down to the

ground or use them as a scaffolding to

make our ideas better in the future and

that is the process there is no perfect

subset of ideas or structures there is

only what we're building temporarily now

to explain things it makes me much more

confident and excited to just build what

we have the best that we can annex

to people what it is so then they can

take it if they want to take it or not

take it if they don't want to take it

and it sometimes seems today more and

more people run into those limits more

and more often wanted ever-widening

ranging range of issues this matters

because when our forbearance fails that

the social fabric tears this that might

have been typed incorrectly from my

dictation however I'll make sure that

when we repeat that quote and put it up

there the wording is accurate or I'll go

back and actually read that quote

however what I found that to mean for

training is that there are so many

people that get into training and they

find a new diet or they find a new

training program and they get on it and

they get to the limit of where they

think that could drive them from a

performance standpoint they're like I

can't do any more than this I just don't

have what it takes or I'm just not like

that person or I'm just not talented

enough or my genetic profile isn't good

enough for me to do that and I think

that part of that is our current society

or current fitness culture sells people

false hope but they also at the same

time give you an explanation that makes

you be at peace with why you can't be

better

so I sell you this concept jump on this

program and it can make you elite then

you start going through it and for

whatever reason the pain becomes too

much it becomes too much of an

impediment in your day-to-day life you

can't afford it whatever the thing is

then on the opposite side of that

because we don't deal well with negative

feelings and we don't deal well with

setbacks we'll explain to people like

well that's okay you know you're it's

okay that you can't do that you're not

you're not young enough this person

doesn't have this this person doesn't

have this we've almost desensitized

people to hard work people don't realize

that whatever it is they want they want

to be lean

they want to be high performers they

want to be CrossFit Games athletes

whatever quest you actually pick is

going to be extremely hard and the less

comfortable you are actually getting to

the limits of what you're capable of

dealing with and figuring out how to

bust through those perceived limits over

time the less successful people are

going to be in general and I think

that's one of the reasons why we're

seeing these big gaps in performance

from the elites of the elite and then

everybody else it seems like there's

such a wide gap and so much of that I

think is just in the self confidence

that people have at the highest level

that no matter what is throwing thrown

at them from an adversity standpoint

they can deal with it and move forward

and that is the concept of just anti

fragility just the concept that whatever

hits me even if I get knocked down I'm

gonna get back up and I'm gonna be

stronger from it and I feel like that is

one of the concepts in the fitness

market that we need to get out we don't

have these fragile bodies that can't be

stressed out or these cardiac systems

that if we put pressure on them will

automatically die from them think we

create this kind of fear around what our

bodies are capable of and then that fear

becomes its own limitation over time and

I think if we continue to do that and we

continue this to perpetuate this way of

thinking about the human body we're

gonna limit people's ability to perform

at a high level at least as long as you

don't think of your old friends as

foolish losers nevertheless even if you

are kind forbearing towards them they

may not be so kind to you that is the

final quote and I think it's an

important one for me because I realized

over time that there was a period of my

time where I felt like the people that I

was around at a certain point that I was

growing beyond them and in my head I

thought I was growing above them I

thought that I was seeing the world from

a higher vantage point I was seeing more

things I was accumulating more knowledge

I was accumulating more life experience

and that in and of itself made things

better

and it took me a while to realize that

if I thought about wherever I came from

whether that's my family whether that's

my old friends whether that's old

mentors in a negative way in some ways I

was thinking of myself in a negative way

because I really am only the sum total

of everything that I have done in my

past and all the experiences I've

accumulated and now I think about those

experiences so I've really tried to be

conscious about making sure that the

people that have contributed to where I

am right now and have contributed to the

feelings of gratitude I'm lucky enough

to feel about the development of

training think tank with the people that

I'm able to develop them with if I think

about those experiences more positively

and I'm positive about those experiences

then I'm more positive about myself and

I do know as well that if I do that

there's no guarantee that they might not

still think I'm a douchebag or that I'm

sitting on my high horse or they might

not

they might hate me or resent me anyway

but I felt like that was a good quote to

end on because I really would like to be

somebody that makes a change in the

fitness market that people can come

together they can become teacher and

student together and develop ideas

together and move on and continue to

push the fitness market forward without

the feelings of resentment that tear us

apart or make it a me versus you type

culture and I think that there's just a

little bit too much aggression in the

fitness market where it's either I'm a

winner and you're a loser and that that

concept of scarcity in general I think

all that does is do damage to the

general public because then they don't

get the best information because then

the best people who should be thinking

together aren't thinking together

because they're combating each other's

ideas so I'm gonna conclude on that one

I think this is a good book for people

to just get and pick up and really think

about thinking I know that seems kind of

an ironic way to explain it but there is

a huge component to movement energy

system training strength training

nutrition

that is a cerebral process and if you

don't understand how to think and you're

just jumping on people's ideas and

you're jumping on bandwagons you might

not realize it now but that could have a

really really detrimental cost to your

long-term health performance and

happiness
