everybody this is Aaron Riley from
linguistic ATAR and in this video I am
going to teach you how to trill your R's
trilling ours is a skill that can be
learned anyone can do it you just need
to know physically how to do it so the
trillium are the biggest mistake people
make is to think that it is done by a
active movement of the tongue as in the
other that where you are actually moving
your tongue up against the roof of your
mouth that is not true it is more like a
flag flapping in the wind your tongue is
just flesh and you need to let it be
just completely lifeless so put no
tension in the tongue whatsoever it
needs to be completely relaxed and the
tongue the the sound is made by a stream
of air flow going over the tip of the
tongue as it is being lifted up against
the roof of the mouth very common
mistake as well is about the positioning
of the tongue so if you try and trill an
American are as an error the are the tip
of the tongue is too far back it is on
the alveolar Ridge or even sometimes
behind that because we have a retroflex
are so you cannot trill if you say trill
you cannot true drill a an american are
you cannot trill it you and and one of
the problems there as well is that our t
is further back in the mouth as well so
we say trill it's almost like a chip
trill so in order to thrill your AR the
T actually has to be more of a dental
sound has to be farther farther forward
in the mouth and the the tongue that
needs to go up against the ridge behind
the teeth so to work on trilling your
R's the first thing to do step one is to
establish an airflow so you want to
establish a stream of air that you can
then play with with your tongue and
figure out what works to get the
trilling sound the best way to do this I
have found is to make a sound an F sound
because it restricts the airflow and but
there is still airflow coming out of
your mouth so it is restricted which is
what you want and then you can flick
your tongue up into this airflow so the
first step is to establish the airflow
the second step is to then take your
completely relaxed tongue and stick the
tip flick it up into onto the the ridge
right behind your teeth and you can kind
of push it up and forward rather than
just kind of flicking it back right so
an American art is retroflex so we turn
our tongue back you don't want to do
that the tongue rather than if this is
the tongue right the American are kind
of curls it back for a trill to are you
want it sort of flat you want it to go
like that
so then the air can go over it so when
you when you stick your tongue up the
tongue just goes up so what you want to
do is practice making the airstream and
then flick the tongue up into it very
important to make sure that the tongue
is completely relaxed and all you need
to then do is add voicing to turn this
into a drilled R and you might spit a
bit when you do it but the at first it
might be you you know you might have too
much tension in your tongue and you
can't try too hard right that's the
biggest mistake people place they try
too hard and they go I'm gonna do this
by a sheer force of will and it doesn't
work your tongue has to be completely
relaxed so you gotta you gotta kind of
loosen things up a little bit so the
tongue has to be completely relaxed and
first you might get like sounds that's
good
that's okay just keep practicing it work
on removing more tension from the tongue
and then what will happen is once you
once you start being able to get this
flapping of the tongue against the the
ridge of the mouth over time as you
practice you can then begin to separate
this this element of the movement from
the end flicking and everything else and
you end up with just being able to trill
the actual are so rather than meaning to
gopher you can just go further because
you you understand how to create the the
airflow that goes over the tongue in the
right way that will create the vibration
this is how wind instruments work this
is like a flag flapping in the wind
it's a very you know common concept but
you have to understand the mechanics of
how Orcs and then it's just a matter of
you have to create an airflow and
practice putting your tongue up into it
in different positions again make sure
that it's not curled back if you're
curling it back then that one puts
tension in there and two if you think
about if you had a wind scoop you know
scoop in the wind it's not going to it's
not going to push down right you want it
to be you know sort of streamlined like
a like the wing of an airplane so that
it can it can go back up and hit against
the ridge right behind your teeth so
practice practice see steps work to
understand the mechanics of it create
the airflow flick the tongue up then
gradually begin to separate out that
drilling sound from the rest remember
the only thing you need to do once you
have up is then add voicing to make it
an other sound so that's how you trill
your arse and that's how you can show
your arse if you have trouble with it it
takes practice but you can do it
Oh
