Beginner Flute Lesson 2 - How to Make a Sound! (embouchure, band face, head joint)

Sharing buttons:

when we play the flute we have to shape

our lips in the correct position

this is called embouchure i also like to

call this

the band face while you're practicing

making the correct flute embouchure at

home

along with me use a mirror to make sure

that you're doing all the steps

correctly

start with a relaxed face and place your

lips together as if saying

m you don't have to tuck your lips in

like this

just have them in a normal position like

you're asleep

now slightly firm the corners of your

lips like this

but keep the middle of your lips smooth

and relaxed

we're going to push air through the

middle of our lips starting with the

sound of the letter p

before we try this on our real flute

we're going to use our finger

as a pretend flute so take your right

hand index finger

and tuck it right under your bottom lip

in this curve right

here under your lip form the flute

embouchure which is your lips together

smooth and relaxed with your corners

firm and we're going to blow air through

the middle of our lips

starting with the sound of the letter p

you should feel the airstream going

across your finger like this

when you blow your air don't imagine

that you're making an o shape or a hole

with your lips

that lets out too much air

keep your lips together and let the air

push

out as if you're saying the sound of the

letter p

this allows us to hold our note much

longer when we're playing the flute we

have to be able to move the direction of

our airstream sometimes down

and sometimes up let's practice moving

the direction of our airstream like this

hold your hand in front of your face and

make your flute embouchure

smooth m and firm corners

we're going to blow our air straight

onto our hand like this

now if you slightly move your jaw and

bottom lip

out and back in you can make your

airstream go

up and down on your hand you'll feel it

move up and down on your hand

let's try that

practice that at home and see if you can

make your airstream go up

and down on your hand and that will get

you ready for playing different notes on

your flute

now we're ready to try making a sound on

the flute

head joint so very carefully open your

flute case and pick up

your flute head joint it's the piece

that has no keys on it

on our flute head joint we have this

piece called the lip plate

this is the part that tucks under our

bottom lip just like our finger did

and this part this hole is called the

embouchure hole

when we play the flute we have to direct

our airstream to go across this hole

when the airstream hits the outer edge

of the embouchure

hole it splits in half and that

vibration

causes the sound so we're going to hold

our flute head joint with the longer end

going out towards our right side

and we're going to place our right hand

to cover up the end

of the head joint place the lip plate

snugly below your bottom lip like we had

our finger

and make sure that the embouchure hole

is lined up with the middle of your lips

you should be able to feel the edge of

the embouchure hole

touching the bottom of your lip

now we're going to take a breath and

keep our lips closed

and let the air push out the center of

our lips as if we're saying the sound of

the letter

p here we go

for some flute students this very first

step of making a sound on the flute head

joint

happens right away and for other

students it takes a little while to get

the hang of it

so if you're not quite getting the sound

just right just be patient and i promise

it'll start working for you just keep

practicing if you're having trouble

making a sound

like mine here are a few tips to help

you improve

first make sure that the embouchure hole

is directly in the center of your lips

i'll show you what it sounds like when

the embouchure hole is not lined up

the second thing to check is make sure

your air stream is going in a slightly

downward direction

so it's going across the edge of the

outer part of the embouchure hole

if your air stream is pointed too high

you won't get a sound

experiment with moving your airstream up

and down like we practiced on our hand

another reason some students have

trouble making a sound is if the lips

are too tight and tense like this

keep the middle of your lips relaxed and

smooth

another thing to check is that your lips

aren't open too wide like this

you don't want to imagine that you're

making a hole with your lips because

you'll probably let out too much air

keep your lips closed and imagine the

air pushing out with the sound of the

letter p

here's the wrong way

and the right way

finally make sure the corners of your

lips are slightly firm

so that the air is coming out just the

middle we don't want the air to leak out

all the way across our lips or it'll

sound like this

[Music]

lips together corners firm

it's really important to practice making

a good sound on your flute head joint

so every time you pick up your flute to

practice start with the head joint and

practice making a nice

clear sound like mine
