hi everyone and welcome back to another
video today we are going to be looking
at how to order a birth certificate in
canada this will be a broad overview
giving you some important information
such as who can order a birth
certificate in canada who issues birth
certificates in canada we'll look at
online versus offline ordering and we'll
discuss some additional tips tricks and
important details that will help you in
ordering a birth certificate in canada
so first let's discuss who can order a
birth certificate in canada
so when we look at who can order a birth
certificate in canada the most important
thing you need to know because this will
stop you immediately from wasting any
time or moving forward if you're not
able to get one is you must be born in
canada or the person named on the birth
certificate must be born in canada if
they were not born in canada there is no
way that anybody in canada can issue
them an official birth certificate it's
just not possible so if the person on
the birth certificate was not born in
canada you have to contact the country
where the person was born there's no way
doesn't matter who you speak to in the
canadian government they cannot give you
a birth certificate canadian birth
certificates can only be issued for
people that were born in one of the
canadian provinces
or territories
when it comes to actually placing an
order for a birth certificate
generally it's going to be limited to
the parents of a minor
or once the person turns 18 or older
again this can depend on provincial or
territorial rules uh the person
themselves can order it for themselves
at any time miners can generally order
it for themselves as well but again this
is a broad overview
but generally it's going to be limited
to parents of a minor or the person
named on the birth certificate
themselves that can place an order if i
want to order it for my sister or my
cousin
there there is going to be rules in
place that allow you to do that but
generally i'm not just able to fill out
the normal paperwork send it in and
receive that because it's a restricted
and private document it's a very
personal document so i wouldn't be able
to just obtain it for a family member of
mine or a friend of mine or anybody else
i would have to get their written
authorization and include that usually
that's in the form of a sworn affidavit
that i would need to include that i have
their authorization if somebody passes
away and you need it there are rules in
place for that as well
that will sort of bring us to the next
step which is who issues the birth
certificates in canada
so in canada each province issues birth
certificates for people born in that
province so if i was born in british
columbia even if i moved to a different
province i always need to contact
british columbia to receive my original
birth certificate even if i've been
living in ontario for 20 years i still
need to contact british columbia the
government there to receive my birth
certificate even if i only lived in
british columbia for one day and i was
born there i always have to contact that
province if i was born in alberta it
doesn't matter where i live in the world
if i want my my official birth
certificate i always have to contact the
government of alberta and they will be
able to issue it if i was born in the
usa but i've lived in alberta for 50
years i cannot get my birth certificate
from alberta i would have to contact the
applicable us government agency so
alberta can always issue birth
certificates for people born in alberta
and only born in alberta ontario can
issue birth certificates for anyone born
in ontario and only born in ontario so
no matter where you live no matter how
long you've lived somewhere you always
have to contact the province where it is
located where you were born so always
reach out to the original province each
province handles their records
separately
and so
ontario government cannot issue a birth
certificate on behalf of british
columbia only the british columbian
government can and ontario can only do
it for people born in ontario
now when it comes to actually ordering a
new birth
certificate can be a little tricky
depending on where you were born
most provinces these days have online
ordering that make it quite a bit easier
but some provinces unfortunately there
is still paperwork that has to be filled
out now some people like that but most
people find it a little bit more
difficult so we'll do a quick overview
on which provinces have online ordering
and offline ordering
so first we'll start with alberta we'll
go in alphabetical order here and
alberta unfortunately does not have a
online option for ordering birth
certificates
you do have to complete an application
form if you're in alberta you would drop
it off at a registry agent if you're not
in alberta you do have to mail it in
so keep that in mind there is no online
ordering option for alberta i'll make
sure that the links to each provincial
website
are included in the description so make
sure if you do want to order anything
you follow the official links and i'll
make sure that those are in the
description
british columbia
does have an online ordering option so
you can apply online you can order over
the phone you can order in person or you
can order it by mail so british columbia
very easy to order from many options to
choose from
that brings us to manitoba manitoba also
has an online option here it says
certificates can be ordered online
anytime here and then it has the
official link to their ordering system
uh it does state here that the branch is
currently closed due to construction so
it seems like typically they may have
in-person services available if you
contact them by phone they can give you
or email they can give you the latest
information on if they
have any walk-ins or appointments
available for in-person if you require
that type of service but otherwise you
can order online and they also have an
application form that you can download
and mail if you're not able to do it
online or prefer to send in the form
it's got the address where to send it to
so make sure again i'll include this
link in the uh description so you can
get the official information
next up we're looking at new brunswick
in new brunswick they also have an
online application form that you can
open up here and this will walk you
through how to order online for a birth
certificate from new brunswick they also
do have a form here that you can print
off and fill in and mail it to them so
two options for new brunswick you've got
your online application form and the
form that you can print off and fill in
so that's great they both both options
are available for new brunswick
next up we're looking at newfoundland
labrador so they do have quite a few
options in newfoundland as well you can
order them online they've got a link
here for ordering you can order it by
mail you can print off the official form
and mail it in and you can also order it
in person so keep that in mind they do
have those three options available in
newfoundland
next up we're looking at nova scotia so
in the province of nova scotia they do
have as their primary way of applying is
online you can apply online for this
certificate and it has a start now
button so apply online start now so if
you're going to do that they do also
have a standard application form that
you can print off and fill in so that's
down here it's normally hidden it says
other ways to apply you click this you
can use the birth certificate
application form if you're unable to
apply online and it'll have the
information when you print off the form
it'll have everything you need to fill
out and mail in so that's nova scotia
next up we're looking at ontario so to
get or replace an ontario birth
certificate again they have the online
ordering right here so you would just
click this button and it'll take you
through the step-by-step of how to fill
out an application online
and they do also have options for
applying by mail and applying by person
so if you download and complete this
application form here you just click on
this link and you can fill it out mail
it in or you can visit a service ontario
center and they will be able to help you
apply these are the two
locations that are able to assist you
one in toronto one in ontario um
please note that this location only
accepts
a murder
oh this is the only location that
accepts emergency service applications
so if you do need an emergency service
application likely this is where they're
printed is going to the shepherd and
doris in toronto
you can also visit the ottawa city hall
if that's more convenient for you to
apply in person but again the main way
that people would apply is applying
online using a credit card
next up we're looking at prince edward
island
and prince edward island does again have
an online application option and they
also have an application form that you
can print off and submit to vital
statistics
so in order to apply online we scroll to
the bottom and click apply online for a
birth certificate
and if you need to print it off and mail
it in that's up here under resources
application for a pei birth certificate
this is what you would click and you
would print off that form fill it in and
mail it into them
next we're going to look at the province
of quebec so this is the official page
for the information about ordering
copies of birth marriage civil union or
death certificates of course we're
discussing birth certificates here but
the information does generally apply for
the same doc for the other documents
mentioned
so here they if you scroll down under
other useful links information you'll
see three ways to order a certificate or
a copy of an act and they've got options
for online ordering by mail ordering and
at service quebec offices so whichever
one you're interested in is what you
would click on and then it would take
you to the information you need in order
to get started
and for here if you just wanted to click
through but you should always read
through all the latest information here
make sure that you qualify to use it
but you would click to use this service
access this service you click this link
and you'll get started in ordering your
quebec birth certificate
here we're looking at ordering a birth
certificate in saskatchewan so
to order you have the online ordering
option you can click on begin your
online order they also have mail fax or
email options and they've got the links
here with the forms and instructions
and they do also have
the option to order in person it appears
but i'm not seeing the actual
information on how to order in person it
just has a section for it so
you may want to reach out to them and
contact them their contact information
is right there i would say if you're
going to try to apply in person you
contact them first because there is a
section for it but it doesn't have the
information but lots of information for
ordering by mail fax email and they've
got the online ordering system
next we're looking at the northwest
territories
unfortunately it looks like the
northwest territories does not have an
online ordering option that i'm seeing
it looks like you do have to fill out uh
print off and fill out an application
form or you can just fill it out on your
computer it looks like and you can uh
submit it either
in person by mail or by fax with a
credit card number
so it looks like that's the only options
there this is where you would find the
form you just click on this and fill out
the relevant form and then send it off
to them it doesn't look like there's any
online option for the northwest
territories
uh looking at the website for nunavut it
looks like it's the same thing as the
northwest territories unfortunately no
online option you do have to fill out an
application for certificate form and
send that into them mail completed forms
to the following address unfortunately
no online ordering option at this time
for none of it you do have to print off
and mail in the form to their vital
statistics agency
and the last territory we have to look
at is the yukon
unfortunately once again i'm not seeing
any option for ordering uh
online it looks like you do have to
complete an application form and submit
it either in person or by mail and then
they can process it that way there's no
online ordering information for uconn at
this time
so that covers all of the provinces
again make sure you are checking the
description below the video if you're
looking to order i'll make sure that all
of the uh links to the official websites
for each province are there so you can
easily access the right page and the
right website
just
thinking about some additional tips and
tricks that you might need to be aware
of if you go to google and you type in
for example order a birth certificate
you may find
some websites such as vital
certificates.ca this is an example of a
website also canadianbirth
certificate.com these make it seem like
these are uh official websites to order
your birth certificate or other
documents from these are what we call uh
maybe agents or things like that where
they're just companies that set
themselves up uh to
to make money uh so it's it's not an
official government service or anything
like that um
some people do find them useful i'm not
gonna say don't use them but uh
personally i wouldn't recommend it uh
but they can sometimes help people who
are having trouble filling out the forms
themselves basically what you would be
doing is you will be giving them written
authorization to apply on your behalf
and then they would submit the
documentation on your behalf but
from my experience i would say that
you're better off just filling out the
applications yourself and avoiding these
websites so that's just if you're
searching on google again if you search
on order a birth certificate these are
going to be some of the top results so
you'll pay a premium fee
to these sites so if you're looking to
save money definitely don't want to use
these because they'll always have to
charge an additional fee on top of the
actual certificate and processing fees
so that's websites like canadian birth
certificate vital certificates dot ca
the only official websites are the
government official websites for the
provinces and their vital statistics
agencies or whichever relevant health
agency handles
these records and again i'm going to
include all of the official links
current as of today in 2022 in the
description so that's something to keep
in mind
and again as we discussed before there's
limitations on who can order them the
information should be available on the
links for each province that i'm
providing in the description about who
can order them and if you need to order
it on behalf of somebody else it should
tell you how to do that as well so make
sure you do have a read through those
pages if you're not ordering your own
birth certificate or one for your minor
child if you're ordering it for anybody
else make sure you do check those
government websites and they'll be able
to give you the official information
hopefully that helps you and makes it an
easier process for you to order your
birth certificate in canada if you have
any questions about this process or you
get stuck anywhere make sure you do add
a comment below the video and i will do
my best to help or create a video if
needed to guide you through it thank you
and have a great day
