hi everyone the new polymer 50-pound
note featuring mathematician alan turing
who set the foundations for work on
artificial intelligence
has officially been released by the bank
of england
and i've just managed to get my hands on
one so i thought i'd do a quick video
showing you all of the new special
features and considering that today is
alan turing's birthday
what better way to celebrate than with
this brand new
polymer no so let's get stuck
in just like the five pound 10 pound and
20 pound notes currently in circulation
this new
50 pound note has also been printed on
polymer
this is a thin and flexible plastic
material
which is cleaner safer and stronger
than the old paper notes but before we
take a closer look
at its security features i think we
should definitely discuss
alan turing whose work was fundamental
in the theoretical foundations
of computer science back in 2018
the banknote character advisory
committee chose to celebrate the field
of science on the 50 pound
no following this nominations were
accepted by the public over six
weeks accumulating over 225
000 nominations and 989
individual characters for consideration
12 names are shortlisted
and alan turing was finally selected by
the governor
of the bank of england the note itself
features a portrait of turing
based on a photo taken in 1951 by
elliott
and frye which is part of the
photographs collection at the national
portrait gallery
the artwork on the reverse the note
celebrates turing pioneering
mathematics and work with computers
along with a quote from him himself
so most notably the design features
technical drawings for the british bomb
the machine specified by turing and one
of the primary tools used to break
enigma and ciphered messages during
world war ii
stationed at bletchley park he played a
pivotal role
in cracking intercepted coded messages
that enabled the allies to defeat the
nazis
in many crucial engagements including
the battle of the atlantic
i mean it's estimated that this work
shortened to war in europe
by more than two years and saved over 14
million lives and in keeping maturing's
code-breaking legacy
this brandy 50 pound has been declared
as the most secure yet
firstly if you take a look to the left
of the note you'll see there is a large
see-through window with a printed image
of her majesty
the queen the foil here on this side is
green and gold but when i flip it over
as you can see it's silver
not only that but within the two gold
foil squares on the front of the note
the image changes between 50 and
pounds but plus these small clover
shapes on the outside of the window
are based on architectural features at
bletchley park
which is where alan turing conducted
most of his work during world war
ii whilst a smaller see-through window
is in the bottom corner of the note so
right here
below the large see-through window on
the front of the note which is just down
here
there is a silver foil patch containing
a hologram
which when i tilt it as you can see
it changes the words between 50 and
pounds next up and there really are a
lot of security features on this new
release
is a 3d printed image of the coronation
crown
and that's above the c3 window just here
but when i turn the note over directly
behind the silver crown on the front
there is a round red foil patch that
contains the letters
a t a nice little nod to alan
turing and much like the 20-pound note
if you look at the front of this new
note where it says bank of in
england up here under ultraviolet
light the number 50 appears in bright
red and green
but for now though you might just have
to trust me that it's actually
there now whilst the next part i'm going
to show you isn't a security feature
it's incredibly important so you'll
notice there are raised
dots to help blind and partially sighted
people identify
the value of the no and finally for
those of you wondering
which notes to look out for it's worth
paying attention to the serial numbers
which you'll find just down here
so we'd recommend keeping your eyes
peeled for the serial numbers
2306 1912
for his birth 0706 1954 for his death
and perhaps even 0907 1941
for the date that the enigma code was
cracked
i mean who knew that one banknote could
have
so many security features and if you're
looking for a way to own this
revolutionary piece of british currency
then look no further than the uk 2021
50 pound polymer banknote date stamp
issue
each date stamp issue has been
postmarked by royal mail
with the notes first day of release so
the 23rd of june
2021 forever ensuring its provenance
but if you're interested you'd best be
