so I asked you what does your voice tell
people about you in that moment of
communication with another person what
is the tone of your voice pain with
scientists say that the tone of our
voice accounts for 38% the impression
we're making when we're in communication
if you were to meet someone right now
and you are really excited to talk to
the person your voice would sound really
vibrant really alive but if you met
someone you really weren't in the mood
to chat your voice is going to slip into
a monotone because a monotone voice
blocks out communication well here's a
little exercise you can do to bust out
of a monotone and increase your range
this exercise is called a slide so we're
going to imagine that your whole body is
a slide and we're going to take the word
hey and I'm going to slide it down my
body here's how it goes hey and we'll go
from bottom of the slide to the top hey
I will try it again
hey good now let's replace the word with
some numbers 1 2 3 4 5 5 4 3 2 1 1 2 3 4
5 5 4 3 2 1 and now let's go 1 3 5 1 3 5
5 3 1 just play around so that your
voice starts to move in it and it starts
to get more interesting to listen to a
little more range
you know most humans will talk around
the same 1/2 notes all of the time yet
our speaking voice has 30 notes in its
range to play around with so that was -
10th let's use the sentence by
Shakespeare to be or not to be that is
the question and first aid in a monotone
voice to be or not to be that is the
question
and now let's bust out of that and we'll
play around our range to be or not to be
is the question play around a little
more to be or not to be that is the
question to be or not to be that is the
question of course we want to sound
natural we don't want to sound fake when
we're in real communication so keep in
mind this is an exercise you're going to
do at home if you have any questions
