and welcome back today I'm going to be
showing you through my top 10 tips on
nailing at your next dance audition I
get so many questions about dance
auditions for drama school dance
auditions for shows I feel like it can
be quite a nerve-wracking thing to go
into and quite a nerve-wracking thing to
prepare for so I just thought I would
share with you my top 10 tips I'm really
going in there getting the best solution
you can possibly do there's so many tips
and so many things that I could like
recommend and little personal things
that help me and but I've kind of tried
to accumulate them into 10 just so this
video doesn't go on for ages as well
just a little disclaimer these are
things that really work for me and help
me
they may not work for everybody but
there are all general things that I
think will help most people before we
get into the video do not forget to
subscribe if you haven't already and
give the video a thumbs up if you liked
it as well just y know whether you like
these types of videos so I'll put my
notes in a little pink sparkly book and
I'm gonna chat through my top ten tips
and I've written it all down
very professional nowadays this is
something that I've really wanted to
make a video on for a while and
something that I really want to help
people with because I know a lot of
people get nervous and feel a little bit
uncomfortable sometimes for dance calls
and so anything I can do to help with
that I'm gonna try so number one is come
prepared records shoes I always take all
my shoes because you just never know
because you never know what they might
ask for also you don't know what the
floors gonna be like so sometimes like a
Josh you might work better on a floor
than a ballet shoe and if you don't have
it you don't really have the option I
just think it's better to take the mall
and then at least you've got the option
and I also always wear trainers to dance
cause just because then I got to carry
them on my bag and sometimes you need
trainers for the dance school as well as
all your other shoes so it's just that
one less thing to carry it really number
two is wear something that you were
comfortable in sometimes we think we
have to wear like a flashy out there or
you know something really tight or
whatever to really stand out in these
auditions and while it is great to wear
something eye-catching and that you know
makes you stand out I think the most
important thing is to be comfortable if
you're gonna wear something that's like
constricting or just doesn't make you
feel comfortable when you look in the
mirror doesn't make you feel out your
best self
don't worry I would much rather go in
and feel comfortable
I'm wearing than be wearing something
like super uncomfortable but that really
makes me stand out just because I feel
like you do a better performance in a
better audition if you feel comfortable
in the first place because you're
already in quite an uncomfortable
environment casually and I put myself
out there now that you're auditioning
for something you really want to do so I
think it's just better to be comfortable
obviously still look smart and still
look presentable but I definitely think
comfort is really really important in
these types of scenarios it's just my
opinion
number three kind of an obvious one but
one that people kind of figure and that
is to warm up make sure you get that
early but dance calls I always try to
get there at least half an hour before
the other day I was at art school and I
was the first person in the entire
building that's how I got that I I tend
to try and get in early just so that I
make sure I'm warm because you really
don't want to hurt yourself that is the
key thing and also you want to give your
best audition so you wanna make sure
you're limber and warm and you know
everything's shaking correctly
especially that's early in the morning I
just don't think it's worth risking
injury for something like that and even
if it's only a short dance call we're
still putting your body through a lot
you know you want to make sure that it's
warm and it's ready for whatever the
dance call is going to bring where do I
think that's like probably the most
important tip and it's one that seems
quite obvious but I think can sometimes
get overlooked number four is to listen
so when you're in the dance school you
will either have like the choreographer
on the curb this assistant or you will
have the associate or you will have
someone basically running the audition
and you will usually have someone
assisting as well a really important tip
I would recommend is just don't really
listen to what they say because
sometimes it's very specific the
choreography sometimes you know they
have you have to have handy really
specifically at a certain place or your
leg has to move on an exact count and if
they can see that you're listening that
will really work in your favor and also
it will mean that you won't have to ask
questions down the road that they've
already explained because I can
sometimes I know them which is
understandable because if they've
already explained something really
specifically and really clearly and then
you're like oh where's the foot on that
and they've said it like seven times
they're probably gonna get it bit
annoyed because ultimately the more you
listen the more tips you're gonna pick
up and the more comfortable you're gonna
be with the dance so just really like
focus in on what they're saying and
really listen to how but number five now
this is something that I find
really helpful but maybe isn't for
everybody and I find it really really
helpful not to watch other people now
this is something that I think really
depends on how you like to handle these
types of situations but I prefer to just
focus on myself not worry about what
anyone else is doing just really focus
on how I'm performing the dogs and
really giving my best audition also kind
of tied into that is don't compare
yourself to other people which is you
know something that if you're watching
other people do a dance before you say
in a dance pool like you will kind of
watch each other
you might start to compare or something
oh we don't do that as good as her oh I
can't do that
that well or things like that so
sometimes it is better to just not watch
and just really focus what you're doing
and go over the steps in your hand and
make sure you're really familiar with it
keep it ticking over and just focus on
yourself because at the end of the day
you're auditioning yourself and that's
what you need to be focusing on that's
just something that I find helpful I
don't really know why I just I've always
done that and it seems to really help me
number six
if in doubt give it face less I really
like ribs basically what I mean by that
is say for example it's more where
things like tap I don't know it's kind
of with everything but it specifically
was tapped so say you're really
struggling with some of the steps and
you know you're not really sure what's
happening with your feet just break form
and it might distract them I mean this
isn't like a surefire tip but this is
something that could help and
potentially you know can distract from
say maybe you make a mistake with your
footwork also I think even like not with
tap with other things if you've really
put performance into them say you don't
feel as comfortable with the steps
they're already performing and really
characterizing the dance and how the
character is meant to be performing the
dance they could really want that and
really see potential in you and see that
you can really become the character and
perform the dance how they would like it
performed I don't think the steps of the
BLM endured in the audition it will
happen so quickly that I really think if
you are thinking oh no I haven't quite
got it just go for it and just perform
it and they'll forgive a few wrong steps
if you're just really in the moment if
that makes sense number seven spatial
awareness this is something that
surprisingly quite a lot of dancers
don't really have spatial awareness I
don't have spatial awareness in normal
life I'm really bad at like when I'm
driving my car I can't tell if a gap I
can actually fit through an art and
Courtney always laughed at me because
like really look like a massive
yeah I'm I can't go through it I'll get
through it ever definitely cab and then
like a really tight Wow yeah my spatial
awareness in my car isn't great but what
I'm dancing I really tried to be aware
of those around me sometimes you do bash
into people like it can't be helped but
I think it's something really important
to preserve your body hunt your health I
think it's something really important to
keep yourself safe and to keep those
around you safe really think about your
spatial awareness especially if your
audition it's been busy there's lots of
people or if it's in a small room or
things like that even if it's not even
if there's like three people and it's a
massive room I just think to be aware of
those around you especially if you're
auditioning for a show there's gonna be
so many people on stage they're gonna be
looking for people who are aware and
conscious of those around them and I
just think in terms of life anyway
that's a good way to go because you have
to have respect for your fellow humans
and make sure that they're okay as well
and yeah an audition is you know just
for you and it's quite personal but also
you you want to make sure it's okay
you're not lumping someone in the face
halfway through because you know it's
their audition - so spatial awareness I
think is really important number eight
pace yourself you often learn the
routine and stages and you might kind of
repeat bits and then go on to the next
bit so you end up doing the routine
quite a few times normally if the
audition isn't really really sure so
you'll probably end up performing it
quite a few times before you then split
into groups and practice it again and
then you'll split it down into like
smaller groups to actually perform it
for them to watch and like watch you so
I think it's really important to pace
yourself don't just go for it
straightaway like oh yeah they are
watching you the whole time so it's
important to kind of be on top of it but
I think it is really important to pace
yourself as well because you don't want
to get to the end when they're like okay
now we're gonna go in four words and do
it - through two times you don't want to
be completely puffed out by then because
you've been doing it doing it and doing
it like full-out I think it's important
to do it full-out definitely but just
pace yourself you know yourself
it's very personal thing you know how
much you can kind of do things over and
over again before you're completely
puffed out so yeah pace yourself
it's very personal but I definitely
think it's something to look out for
number nine is be safe now this kind of
ties into like the spatial awareness and
things like that but ultimately it can
come under lots of different things the
most important thing is your safety and
keeping yourself safe so say you're in a
room and maybe the floors really slippy
and your shoes like
really slipping around on the floor yes
that's unfortunate take what steps you
can to help that scenario and to make it
easier for yourself but ultimately do
not put yourself at risk do not hurt
yourself and just fling us up around
because you really want to do a good
audition be careful and like things like
sometimes if it's really busy in a room
and it's really sweaty that all can get
pretty slippy we really have a look out
for yourself and if something feels
dangerous feels unsafe don't do it in
terms of kind of like the size of a room
say there's a really low ceiling and you
want to maybe go for like a lift or a
backflip check things like that first
don't just go into things and fling
yourself around without first assessing
the situation if that makes sense like
low ceiling you gotta bash your head
slippy floor you're gonna fall over I
see quite a few accidents and sometimes
they really can't be helped but as well
as yet looking out for other people you
have to have help for yourself because
no one else is looking out the use as
much as you will account for yourself so
if something doesn't feel safe flag it
mention it or just be really careful if
something feels too risky too unsafe
just don't do it it's not worth putting
yourself at risk of ending your career
and injuring yourself so badly that you
can never do an audition again at the
end of the day your health and your
safety is the most important thing and
my final tip number 10 is if you are
confused or have any questions asked
this kind of leads on from number three
which was to listen and obviously if
they have explained something already
and said you know it's really important
that we always start on the left leg and
you say which like do we start on and
they have to repeat that they'll
probably get annoyed but if you know
you've been really listening and there's
just one bit you're really struggling
with do not suffer in silence ask and
they don't mind like they want people to
ask questions they want people to come
forward if they need something going
over words that are confused about
something because then that helps
everyone as well so don't be afraid to
ask and also if you need to get near the
front so you can see maybe ask if you
can come closer to the front or if you
can swap the lines around yeah just ask
questions listen and ask questions just
to make sure that you do the best
audition and give yourself the best
chance that you possibly can and I know
a lot of people are nervous about dance
auditions and they know that it can be a
really scary thing to go into trust me I
know I
oops for them too I feel like if you
have these things in place it can really
help and if you go and leaving us
prepared and comfortable as you possibly
can
knowing things like this you're going to
stand a much better chance and you're
going to feel so much happier with what
you do and have so much more comfortable
being in there as well it is
nerve-racking but you can't do it just
go in there focus on yourself and do the
best job that you can possibly do and it
will be fine trust me I hope that you've
enjoyed this video found it helpful I've
really enjoyed making it I really
