so we're back let us tell you what's
going on today
first we're working on the eaves of the
house hopefully finishing them up
so we're just installing vinyl soffits
around our eaves to close them in
uh the process has been going really
smoothly really happy with the progress
now we did post a video previously
showing the first half of this project
so if you guys missed that
feel free to go back and watch that
video uh it's pretty basic stuff we just
cut it
and put it in
[Music]
[Music]
so
[Music]
so
[Music]
something that we didn't show in the
last video was cutting the vinyl
uh we intentionally didn't show it
because we're not doing it the best way
possible
and we don't want to act like we don't
want to influence people to do something
the way we're doing it when it's not
great yeah we are using our table saw to
cut our vinyl soffit material
and the table saw is just not the ideal
tool for that
we're using it because it's works best
for us
with the tools we have and
it's just a little dangerous and i don't
want you guys trying that so we said
let's not show it
we found that the best way to cut the
vinyl in the table saw
is to turn the blade around backwards so
it's
reversed and just take it easy
definitely a two-person job to hold up
the vinyl while we're sliding it through
and the vinyl goes everywhere you gotta
wear safety glasses
and it's super loud your protection
when you turn the blade backwards it's
crazy loud deafening
when you turn the blade the right way it
cuts the vinyl quieter
but the cut is not as clean yeah it
chips it up
more
[Music]
so
so when we shared the first half of this
project we had a number of people tell
us we were doing it wrong or
at least try to give us suggestions on
how to do it right
and we appreciate that we always
appreciate you guys uh your suggestions
your comments
but we wanted to go over why we were
doing it the way we're doing it and it's
not wrong
with soffits as with a lot of things in
diy renovation doing all this stuff
there's more than one way to do it but
there's always a popular way to do it
we ran into the same issue when we were
cutting the house wrap and installing
windows and
we had so many people tell us you're
cutting your house wrap wrong you're
supposed to do it this way
x cup fold it in and they're telling us
our windows will leak
and we were doing it wrong they were
saying it's wrong for sure you're gonna
have problems but
the problem was that we weren't doing it
wrong we were just doing it a different
way than
the norm the normal way of doing it is
an
outdated way of doing it and it used to
be right
it's not technically wrong it's just
there's new and improved methods
that's kind of the same thing that
happened with the soffits we installed
it
the soffits using our method which is
kind of a new and improved way of doing
it
but a lot of people who've been doing it
the old way
thought we were doing it wrong yeah now
there's probably five or six different
ways to install soffits
it all depends on your house how your
eaves are built and how you want to
install them
the way we're doing it involves j
channels
f channels you know vinyl channels and
clipping the soffits into those channels
so back in the day people were
installing aluminum soffit they still do
but what you do is you put an f channel
j channel uh on the wall of the house
you put the aluminum soffit panel into
that
and then you would nail or staple it to
the fascia board
so that was the norm it's hard to
explain i wish i could demonstrate it
but basically
you're nailing the face shop each piece
gets nailed up and then
we moved to vinyl which became very
popular and
people carried that same technique over
so they would put the channel on the
wall usually an f channel
and then they would put the vinyl soffit
in and tack it
up so while that's not incorrect it's
not the only way to do it that's one of
the options
because with vinyl also came more
installation options
because it's flexible aluminum is not
flexible you can't really do
i mean it's flexible but it bends with
vinyl you can do what we're doing
where we put a channel on both sides a j
channel f channel and we can pry the g
channel open
to pop that panel in place the soffit
panel and then the other thing that we
do
is we install a half inch
j channel it has to be the half inch j
channel to hold our soffits up
so that when we put our fascia piece on
we use vinyl fascia
and it clips on it doesn't just sit
under it and get nailed on it clips on
and the way we do it is a very clean
very professional
nail-less installation it looks really
good it's super solid it's going to last
forever
i think the problem that people have
with it is they're just not used to it
the reason you don't see a lot of people
doing it the way we're doing it is
because it costs more money
and it's a little slower professionals
they don't want to spend more money
more money or more time on a job so they
do things the quick way the quick way is
cut it throw it up nail it on cover the
nails say it's done
our way like i said i think just comes
out as a better product but it does cost
more and take more time
yeah and you have to plan more to be
able to get that strip
up there before the drip cap yeah we it
involves putting the
lock strip above the drip cap that's
going to hold the fascia in
it involves finding the half inch
j-channels which the stores don't always
carry
um it involves buying more channel
because i mean just think about the cost
savings where people could just
nail them to the fascia board and not
buy those channels
yeah so that's really the difference is
i think the professionals don't want to
spend the extra time and money some of
them do
but most of them don't they want to get
the job done both ways are correct
and i just wanted to point that out that
we're just doing it a different way and
that's what we like to do is do things a
little bit different and you're going to
see that on our channel
that's the name we do things different
we like to try new techniques find
improved ways different ways you know
experiment learn grow that's just what
we do in life
don't be fooled into thinking there's
only one way to hang a soffit there's
actually
many and and we like our way because
then you don't have to face nail the
fascia and we don't have to worry about
water getting in and it's so clean it's
so watertight it's beautiful
it might not work for your situation you
just gotta work it and that's why we're
not doing how to's
we're just doing inspire twos and we
you'll get ideas
and we're just sharing our journey with
you guys so i hope that makes sense as
to why we're doing it differently we
appreciate all the videos showing us how
to correctly install
soffits and we appreciate all the input
and advice
we've read up on it a lot we always do
we like to research
yeah just know that we do have reasons
for the way we install things we made
some big progress today
finishing up those eaves so now we can
start on the fascia covers
uh we already did one we did that off
camera just because i wanted to make
sure i got it right and it took us a
little while to make sure
all the measurements were gonna work and
figure it out
but now that we got one up the rest
should be pretty easy
so this is our fascia cover and it
actually came quite a bit wider we had
to cut it down to about four inches
we're just prepping it to go up what i
did was cut off
a little bottom channel here and i took
a little off the top
and that's because i'm getting ready for
the next overlap the next piece will
come over there
and that way you won't see a seam
it'll make sense but that's all i'm
doing right now and now we got to
prepare to go in
and this is where those little clip
channels that i put on the roof really
come
into play yeah it's right under the drip
cap
what we're going to do is use this tool
to put little tabs on this and these
tabs are going to lock into that channel
and it basically makes this a nail-less
installation
oops
i'm putting these probably every six or
so inches
six to eight inches there's no rhyme or
reason
and basically we're going to clip the
top in to our track
so that's locked in and then if you guys
remember when i installed the soffits
i have a j channel on the bottom holding
them up
i'm going to clip this right around the
j channel like this
it's going to lock in no nails in the
face super clean
water tight and it's going to be held in
there like super tight so
that's the installation i hope that
makes sense to you
now let's do it for real
[Music]
so now you guys can see that this is
solid it's
locked hard around that j-channel and
it's locked into that
strip up there that strip also keeps
this
away from the fascia so that drips the
rain away from the house
but that is the cleanest most
professional installation that i've come
up with
when doing these because there's no
nails no caulk no worries about leaking
perfect
[Music]
so
[Music]
[Music]
so
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
so i can't believe we're done with this
project it just turned out so good
so beautiful we had a lot of extra
soffit i got a little carried away
buying that so we'll return that we'll
save some money
that'll be good yeah because those are
expensive and
i couldn't believe how much the soffits
came to alone
each of those panels is 12 feet long but
they don't go very far in the house and
they're like 15 bucks a piece
the channels are probably six plus
dollars a piece
yeah i mean it adds up but it's done
and that means we can move on to siding
we're working from the top down roof
soffits siding it's gonna be nice
although we'll probably
paint the foundation next oh yeah we've
had some questions about that
what are we doing with our peeling
chipping ugly foundation
and i think we've decided to paint it
yeah it's painted now
we're just gonna repaint it because i
think removing the paint is gonna be
harder than just repainting it so we
haven't been doing too much else we did
cut down a tree the other day
a random tree chopping you know
sometimes we walk outside and we'll see
something like an ugly tree and we'll
say why is that there
it was just an ugly jack pine as usual
it was hanging over the driveway and i
didn't like it
man those jack pines are hideous lights
up the background though look at it
guys look at this gorgeous view
stunning
it's not ours
[Laughter]
so guys that's all we have for today we
really appreciate you guys coming along
we always do so we'll have another video
coming soon
i'm not sure if we're starting that
siding right away we just bought a
ladder
believe it or not another ladder and
we're just gonna make sure we're ready
to start before we start so
in the meantime we'll probably start
with that foundation painting you want
to do that
we'll see we'll see we'll share it with
you guys so thanks for watching and
until next time
take care bye
you
