hey everybody thomas joseph here and
today i am really excited to share with
you two simple ways to get those pesky
skins off of the hazelnut now why do you
want to remove the implement skin anyway
well it is very bitter and ultimately if
you do use the skin in your face good or
whatever else you're making you will end
up with a a bitterness to whatever
you're making so today i'm going to
share with you just two simple ways to
get the skins off for those who don't
know this is what a hazelnut looks like
in the shell so it is quite small it has
a really nice amber color to it and it's
really easy if you wanted to if you
wanted to buy shell on hazelnuts
especially around this time of year you
can easily shell them with a nutcracker
or if you have one of those seafood
tools in your kitchen drawer it works
just as well so all you have to do is
place it in the middle of the nutcracker
and give it a gentle squeeze you don't
want to crush the nut inside you really
just want to crush the shell and you
should be able to extract the nut from
the shell and then begin the process of
skinning the hazelnut now hazelnut a
little fact for you guys
turkey the country is actually the
largest producer of hazelnuts in the
world italy and spain are also large
producers of hazelnut almost all the
hazelnuts grown in the united states are
grown in oregon today i'm going to share
with you my preferred method for
skinning hazelnuts and that is roasting
the hazelnuts so i have a large cookie
sheet here and I'm gonna just spread the
hazelnuts in a nice even layer on my
sheet tray and then this goes into a
preheated oven I'm using a 375 degree
oven today but you could use a 350 oven
you could even go up to 400 degrees
really what you're looking to do is to
toast the nuts until they're really nice
and fragrant you don't want to overcook
these because you will burn them but
these are going right into an oven and
I'll show you how easy it is to lose
the skins then from the hazelnuts so the
hazelnuts here have been toasting in the
oven for about 10 minutes and they're
still nice and warm now the first way in
which to remove the hazelnuts is to take
these warm hazelnuts and place them on a
towel that you don't mind getting
stained a little bit because sometimes
the skins do discolor the linen what you
need to do is just take the cloth itself
and you're going to rub the hazelnuts
rubbing the skins off of the nut it
really is a neat and interesting way to
take the skins from the nut itself thus
removing all of that bitterness as you
can see look just within a few seconds
here I'm removing pretty much all of the
pesky skin and you might have to do this
a few times now if you're having a
little bit of trouble and the skins
aren't coming off that means that you
need to toast the nuts longer so put
them back on that cookie sheet right
back into the oven for a few minutes
more until they're a little bit darker
in color and the skins should come off
really easily
look at that perfect you have a toasted
hazelnuts you have that intense nutty
flavor that really is kind of what
you're looking for this method is really
my favorite method so now the second way
you can remove the skins from roasted
hazelnuts here is in a coarse sieve or
colander like this now what you're
really doing is just agitating the
hazelnuts around in the colander and
it's breaking the skins off from the
nuts it's pretty much the same thing as
the towel this method I just think is
also pretty useful too if you don't want
to get your kitchen towel dirty you can
really do a good amount of hazelnuts in
a nice large colander like this really
quick work and you get a perfect peeled
hazelnut just like that now there is a
second method in which you could peel a
hazelnut now this is the blanching
method and all you really need is a pot
I would say a deep pot filled probably
about halfway with water and you want to
add a couple tablespoons of baking soda
to it and really what you're gonna do is
blanch the hazelnuts for about three
minutes and
if you do this you guys you might be a
little startled because the water does
turn black but after three minutes you
drain the nuts and the skin should peel
right off as well so if you do have a
recipe when you're not interested in
toasting your hazelnuts which I would
advise against you can use the blanching
method and it works just as well so
there you go guys two easy ways to
remove the skins from hazelnuts avoid
the bitter bite enjoy your hatefulness
