backspin with you wedges what a skill to
have to improve your score so that you
can access flags easier some sometimes
unaccessible
and also we're not even just talking
about the sexy backspin getting the ball
ripping back or even just talking about
creating enough backspin to get the ball
to stop on the green so that you can
work on your distance control better
we're going to talk about equipment
we're going to talk about technique and
then finally we're going to talk about
the course conditions as well all of
these elements play a huge factor in
getting you to spin your wedges more I'm

Bell icon so you don't miss a single
video moving forward we're going to talk
about creating backspin we're gonna
start off with the equipment first
because this is a huge element to crane
backspin it's a number one thing in
equipment to bear in mind is that we
want a surface that's going to create as
much spin as possible and to get that
surface we need clean grooves we need a
clean face and we also need a dry golf
club often if there is mud if the
grooves have been worn out a little bit
too much or there's too much moisture on
the face that are all that's all
elements that stops the ball making the
best contact with the grooves so
maximize your spin that's very very
important
clean grooves dry face and making sure
there's grooves on there that aren't too
old a newer wedge is typically gonna
spin more than a wedge from ten years
ago next thing and equipment is golf
ball you want to use a cover that's soft
enough when you use a cover that soft it
has the ability to grip onto the face
enough to create that spin now typically
softer covered golf balls are slightly
more expensive but what you generally
find is that they are a softer feel
they're a softer sound here's a couple
of examples this is a softer golf ball
and when I'm hitting the ball up you can
tell that it has that little bit of a
softer sound now this is a much harder
covered golf ball and listen to the
sound difference it's quite astonishing
now the harder cover golf ball is going
to have less of an effect to grip to the
face therefore not be able to maximize
your spin now one thing you've gotta
offset here is if your ability level is
for a golfer who needs that slightly
more harder golf ball to gain distance
well there's got to be a trade-off there
and when you add a distance ball into
the equation typically the spin does
drop you can't particularly have it both
ways unless you go for the super premium
balls which offer a little bit of both
so then we move into technique and this
is what you as a golfer can do to
maximize your spin I'm going to go off
to main points maximizing loft and also
maximizing speed if we can do those two
elements then we've got some real good
points to create as much spin as we can
let's talk about maximizing loft first
so when looking at creating spin we need
to make sure that we are offering as
much loft to the golf ball as possible
for the shot that we're hitting now
that's obviously going to play a part of
how far you hit the golf ball I don't
want you to use a club that's too much
loft so you don't get to the distance
I'd be pretty pointless but if you have
the option to use more loft to get more
spin do so because that's going to be
such a key characteristic to this and
I'm using this magnetic stick on the
golf club to illustrate loft now you can
do this at home even with some blue
tucking a tee peg you could blue tuck a
tee peg to the club face to highlight
where the loft is pointing as a practice
age because this is visually it's very
powerful what we don't want to do when
we're hitting a shot to create spin is
to take too much loft off the golf shot
if we start leaning this golf club too
far forward we're subtracting some very
very very valuable loft to create that
spin to get the most performance out of
the shot what we also don't massively
want to do either is lean the golf club
backwards and increase huge amounts of
loft because as much as yes that will
create spin what it give us in loft we
will have more chance of hitting the
ground behind enough
never a good thing so when looking at
creating loft and when I'm a hitting a
wedge shot here with loft and trying to
create spin I want to make sure that the
shaft angle is as straight to your body
as possible so point the bottom of the
golf club him pretty much easy belly
button and the ball just in front a
center so the club head the leading edge
of the golf club is smart bang in the
middle of my feet and middle of my
stance what we want to do then when we
come in to hit the golf shot is to keep
that loft as high as possible now this
is where practice and a little bit of
self-diagnosis comes into play as well
what we definitely don't want to see too
much is a flick behind because that's
going to cause us to hit the ground so
what I would recommend is when we're
trying to increase loft at the point of
contact we're trying to get this shaft
to be back to level again but these have
a favor and actually rotate around the
left hand let left hand side so if
you're writing a golfer that's the leg
that's closer to the target the reason
why I say lies because it's going to
guarantee as a better strike while we're
still trying to increase the loft so I'm
gonna top magnet off for a second I say
do it with a bit of sticky in a tee peg
it shows the same effect otherwise you
just go those online so as I'm coming in
to hit the shot with loft I'm gonna
rotate around that left hand side and
even post impact keep the loft on the
golf club as high as possible
that way we're moving our weight to the
left we're gonna get a good strike it's
also gonna encourage us to hit down a
little bit without needing to force the
issue and we're maximizing the loft as
much as possible so shaft level address
pretty much the lead engaging in the
middle of the stance looking at coming
back into the golf ball with the shaft
level and just move it around that left
leg and as we do all of that hit the
ball with speed because the more speed
you can put into this shot the more spin
you will create
[Music]
as you can see that's the ball lands it
stops within a yard or so and increases
that spin gonna play up one more time
for you so level with the shaft looking
at increase in the loft as we come
through to hit the shot moving that
weight around the left leg to make sure
we get that angle of attack down and we
shift the weight post in post the golf
ball and then hit the ball with speed
maximum spin best result go in a bit and
you're going to get the ball to stop
much quicker than what you'd normally
used to and you might even get the ball
zipping back if you hit the ball hard
enough from even more loft right let's
get on the golf course because that's
going to play another massive important
part on how much spin you can create
when hitting shots into the green okay
so on the golf course and the first
thing to consider is the lie and they
show you three different lies tight lie
here on the fairway and how it affects
the spin on this particular shot a ball
in the semi rough and how that again
affects the shot and the spin and then
one more in the deep rough if we start
to get grass between the club and the
ball it's going to affect the spin
characteristics so the tighter the lie
the better the spin that is as we start
to get more grass in between the club
and the ball the less reaction of the of
the grooves and the golf club can have
an impact and therefore reducing spin so
if I hit this one off the fairway first
and see how this one spins
as you can see once it landed one hop
and then spun back not loads but spun
back enough that's the advantage of
hitting our off the fairway let's move
on to semi Roughnecks and I'll show you
the differences so send me rough this
time there's a little bit more grass
between the club and the ball I'm not
expecting this to spin as much but
that's okay you've got to factor that
into the shot so instead of London in
this level to the flag or even past the
flag looking at London this a little bit
short of the flag it's not gonna have a
huge influence but enough not to be able
to optimise the spin totally you've got
a factor that into play as you can see I
wanted to that first bounce it hop
forward instead of actually coming
backwards also on the line like this
sometimes you can get the occasional
flyer where the grass does catch between
club and ball and the ball just comes
out with no spin at all something to
bear in mind ideally want to land a bit
shorter I think quite get out right but
not bad of a result let's go on to the
deep rough next so as you can see now
third shot deep rough and obviously
rough can get even deeper than this the
more now grass is in between court and
between club and ball it's just going to
affect the spin characteristics it's not
going to spin it is optimum rate so
again a shot that you've got to take
into consideration and you look at
London this quite a bit shorter and then
run it up to the green because I'm just
not allowed to spin it from that lie
and we pretty awesome shop but you can
see there I had to lie much shorter the
ball didn't stuff it took a big first
half and then run past the flag you've
got to take the line into consideration
it's almost the first checkpoint when
looking at optimizing your spin on the
golf course see the backspin I'm just
getting the ball to stop it's not a few
more aspects as well another important
aspect to judging spin is what the wind
is doing if you're playing a shot this
downwind towards the flag that winds
gonna knock the ball down it's not going
to optimize the spin and you've got to
again turn ante calculation London the
ball shorter it's not gonna be a bad
idea if you'll play the shot into wind
and you might have seen this out on the
golf course in the past if you're
playing into wind the balls more likely
to climb on the wind it's more likely to
increase the level of spin on the golf
ball so when it lands it's probably got
more spin downwind less spin into wind
more spin remember that when taking spin
into consideration
another huge important factor to
consider is the firmness of the greens
if you pitch into a softer green a
little bit more receptive and certainly
one that's fast the spin will be applied
more you'll end up spinning the ball
quite easily when pitching a ball into a
firmer ground condition well let's say
there's no rain or it's been a harder
condition as the ball lands it's not
gonna be receptive and that's more
likely to kick forward you're gonna have
to factor that into your shots when
played into the green the Greens will
affect the ability of the golf ball to
spin okay guys that was three elements
to create more backspin for you as a
golfer so that you can play about golf
so you can improve the ability for your
golf ball I'm into the green whether
that's getting the ball to zip back and
get closer to the flag or whether it's
just simply getting the ball to land on
the green and stop skills to have to
make you better at golf thanks watching
