hey guys what's going on coach Justin
here from ultimate baseball training got
a great video for you today we're gonna
be talking about how to hit a fast
pitcher a lot of the times especially at
the younger levels there's nothing more
intimidating than when a pitcher is
throwing gas but I'm here to tell you
that you should actually look forward to
facing fast pitchers number one because
it's obviously a challenge but a lot of
the times you know they're fast balls
are straight a lot of the times they
were their fastball is way too much
because they think that they can just
blow it by hitters so you should embrace
it if you're going to be playing at a
high level anyway you're gonna have to
learn how to hit fast pitching so
without further ado let's just jump
right into the video
let's start with the basics when it
comes to any time you're hitting but
especially against a guy that throws a
little bit harder do not tense up at the
plate you're not tense your grip do not
tense your shoulders guys we have to
stay loose and the reason for that is
loose muscles are quick muscles when
you're tense at the plate
when you and this happens a lot of the
times without even thinking about it you
just get nervous oh man this pitcher
he's really good he throws really hard
then all of a sudden it works from the
top down you know our hands tighten up
our grip tightens up we really want to
you know make an impression and get a
hit off this guy so our grip tightens up
and that's gonna drastically slow down
our bat speed then from there our
shoulders instead of saying nice and
relaxed and loosey-goosey they kind of
rise and they get a little bit tense as
well so now our entire upper body is
really really tense then from there our
legs just aren't working properly
because we got that jumbly feeling in
there and all of a sudden we're just
completely thrown out of whack so always
remember you're breathing that's a big
thing be conscious about your grip you
know loosey-goosey loose muscles are
quick muscles so before you step in the
box take a deep breath
you know wiggle your fingers something
that I found is when you're in the box
if you struggle with having too tight of
a grip you know just wiggle your fingers
keep it nice and loose in your hands but
bottom line we got to stay real loose
loose because loose muscles are quick
muscles next thing when it comes to
facing a guy who throws gas and really
Pepper's it in there a lot of younger
players they're not even just younger
players players at every single level a
lot of the times what they do is they
try and speed everything up because he's
throwing hard his motion to the plate is
really hard so instead of you know maybe
their normal rhythm is no load stride
load stride then all of a sudden they're
they're doing everything quick eyes
moving all over the place and so I
recommend starting everything just a
little bit sooner right so I always
teach dance with the pitcher as far as
loading okay so as the pitcher kind of
goes in his motion and he brings his leg
up to come B that's sort of when you go
back and you bring your leg up and as he
strides towards the plate that's roughly
usually the time that you would stride
towards him now with a fast pitcher
instead of
trying to just speed up our motion just
start everything a little bit sooner
next tip I got for you is time to
fastball and then adjust to the
off-speed another major mistake that
people make is you know maybe a guy
throws hard maybe he also has a pretty
good curve ball or changeup and so they
start guessing at the plate when they're
you know got two strikes on him or
whatever they're guessing at the plate
and even with two strikes against any
pitcher but a guy that throws gas you
have to still be sitting on the fastball
and then it's easy to adjust to the
off-speed all right it's very very
simple to do you're timing the fastball
in the on-deck circle and your timing
the fastball all games so when you're in
the box you do the same thing you time
the fastball and then if you recognize
it's a curveball you just keep your
hands back you wait just a split second
longer you kind of sink into your legs
just a little bit and then you try to
you know drive the ball up the middle or
the other way but the major point is
everything timing wise is keyed off the
fastball because if you guess breaking
ball and it's a fastball then you're too
late there's no way that you can speed
things up so be ready for the fastball
then adjust to anything else and the
best way to do that the best way to hit
the best approach is the yes yes no
approach that's the final tip I have for
you the yes yes no approach basically
what that is is every single time you
get into the batter's box you know you
get your sign maybe you look at the
label take a deep breath you do not step
into the box until you're committed to
swinging at that particular pitch as you
move up levels there's not time for you
to be thinking okay if this pitch is a
strike then I'm going to swing at it
there's no time you're not going to be
able to catch up to that what you have
to be doing is you have to be thinking
yes this pitch coming to me right now I
am swinging on this particular pitch
until it's a ball so it's yes yes yes
yes oh no that's outside okay ball one
step out regather your thoughts then the
next pitch yes yes yes yes yes boom and
then you put a good swing on it but it's
much easier to be saying yes yes yes and
then tap the brakes the last second than
it is to be saying and maybe if this
good pitch maybe I'll take a swing and
by then it's just too late you're gonna
be frozen I hope you enjoyed
