there is nothing more satisfying than
nailing your fairway wood off the
fairway you've just had a great Drive
and you want to reach a par 5 in two I'm
gonna show you how you can nail your
fairway wood off the ground more often
than ever before with some really simple
tips hi guys I'm Rick shields PGA golf
professional if you are new to my

down below what 3-wood do you have in
the bag currently ok so you found the
middle of the fairway yet you're still a
long way to the green this might be a
par-5 that you want to try and reach
into or a super long par-4 this is where
nailing your fairway wood is key to
lowering your score being able to
execute this shot gives you so much
power in the game because close you get
to the green hopefully on the green you
can make the best score possible now a
3-wood is the longest Club you're gonna
carry in your bag you like lift it off
the floor and that's what makes this
shot the most challenging being able to
judge where the bottom of the golf ball
hits the ground is essential and that's
what I want to show you right now in
this video here the 3-wood off the tee
is slightly easier the ball is pegged up
and it gives you the luxury of being
able to lean back and almost hit the
ball on the way up when the ball is on
the ground you don't have that luxury
anymore so hitting off on the ball isn't
gonna work when the shot when the ball
is on the fairway because soon as you
start hitting up you could easily hit
the ground behind the ball or if you
miss the ground you're gonna top the
ball that might be where you score the
3-wood along the ground and you show you
some really simple ways to make sure
that you make that clean contact and
ideally just hit that slightly more
downward blow when the ball is on the
fairway as opposed to when it's on the
tee so when I set up to the 3-wood if I
think about how I set up to it off a tee
I love that ball position fairly close
to my left foot
so almost forward in my stance and I
would encourage the body to slightly
tilt backwards getting that spine angle
tilting away from the ball that's going
to help me hit up on the ball
gravity on the fairway we don't
particularly want those movements so I'm
going to bring the ball position about a
ball closer to the middle of my stance
that's going to help me hit slightly
more neutral angle of attack or slightly
down on the golf ball it's gonna be
great with a 3-wood off the floor with
the upper body I'm trying to get now the
sternum to sit more on top of the club
head I don't particularly want the
sternum to lean back too much because
again don't be hitting up on the golf
ball here now when I make contact I'm
looking at trying to take the smallest
divot when I hit the golf ball trying to
hit the ball first and then taking a
tiny divot just past the golf ball is
gonna be key because the bottom of the
golf club is nice and flat you're not
like listed big the club too much into
the ground it's not gonna just dig in
the ground and never come back up the
likeliness at the bottom of the golf
clubs gonna skim through the surface
make great connection with the ball but
before you know it the balls flying
towards the green and you fit a great
shot so ball position just slightly back
to where it's normally play it slightly
closer to the middle of my stance my
sternum is over the top of the club head
and as I come to hit this I'm looking at
hitting just past the golf ball and
hitting a very small divot it's gonna
help me strike the ball as clean as I
can hit it
I'll take that every day yeah that's
crushed now what you'll see in the
slow-mo there I didn't particularly lean
my body back I wasn't trying to lift the
golf ball up in the air which is a
mistake a lot of players mate with a
3-wood I was making sure that my body
weight was still moving around towards
my left hand side making sure that I
moved with the golf sharp as opposed to
leaning back and again bottoming out
behind the golf ball
I'll hit another one so board positions
just slightly more central than normal
my sternum is over the top of my club
head and I'm looking at trying to take
the very smallest divot just pass the
golf ball that way you're making really
clean connection just feel confident
I'll just score for the grass up there
be up past the ball and that's giving me
that confidence I'm hitting it in the
right spot a great tip for this if you
got a bit of time to practice when
you're out on the grass stick a tee peg
in the ground about an inch and a half
past the golf ball so if you're
struggling getting that movement to the
left it's a great little tip to
encourage that movement and that
downward strike to make that really good
connection so now I'm gonna focus on
making sure that I almost skim that tee
peg out of the ground as I hit the
3-wood here and that way you're making
out cleaner connection I'm not quite
skimmed out the ground but I know that
the bottom of the golf club was close to
the tee as I hit at that time guys
thanks for watching
you are gonna reach more par 5s into you
are gonna hit longer par fours and
you're gonna hit these three woods
much better you've got to separate the
gaps between hitting a fairway wood off
a tee and hitting it off the fairway
there is a clear difference and it's
going to help you hit it better
going through this method today thanks
watching guys stay tuned lots more to
