Need up to 30 seconds to load.
so over the last few years i've been to
29 countries which mathematically
speaking means
i've been on 29 planes that seems pretty
accurate accurate and part of the reason
i've been able to travel as much as i do
is i have a process for finding flights
for like crazy cheap i'd probably spend
one-eighth as much on flights as your
rich friend's mom does on her trip to
the bahamas and today i'm here to spill
the beans on all my deepest darkest
secrets regarding airline travel we're
gonna talk about my usual process for
finding cheap flights some web hacks for
lowering prices i'm even gonna show you
a special tool i use you probably
haven't heard of that created so much
controversy they literally got sued by
united airlines luckily this website won
the case and yes you can still use it so
when we're searching for cheap flights
the first thing we're going to want to
do is clear our cookies
and now that those are gone we're going
to want to delete the cookies from our
web browser have you ever been shopping
on amazon for a standard household item
like say a harness for your chicken and
then the next day you get youtube ads
for chicken harnesses and you're just
like oh my gosh who was reading my mind
right now that's what cookies do they
let brands track your browsing history
and then do things like recommend
products for you or curate ads for you
unfortunately airlines use cookies too
if an airline notices that you're
searching for flights multiple times
they'll purposely bump up the prices a
little bit in hopes that you'll just be
like oh my gosh the price is going up i
have to buy it now but we're not trying
to get our prices bumped up we're trying
to find the biggest discount we can so
what you're gonna do is on your browser
go delete your cookies or do what i do
and just open a brand new incognito
browser window so now that our cookie
situation is taken care of the next
thing we need to do is download a vpn
vpn is a virtual private network and it
masks your ip address unless you pretend
to be places you're not vpns are super
popular among scammers who are trying to
pretend to be in the us when they're
really in india or nigeria and they're
also really popular among people who are
trying to stream netflix shows from
other countries but little known fact
vpns are also useful for booking flights
and they can save you tons of money i
personally use surfsharkvpn but a couple
other good ones are nordvpn and
expressvpn flights are priced
differently depending on what country
you're looking at them from and when you
look at a flight in a different country
it may end up being cheaper than looking
at that same flight in your own country
let me just show you an example so let's
say you're wanting to fly from phoenix
to london phoenix london let's go one
way tuesday may 10th searching from here
in the u.s it looks like the couple
cheapest flights are about 655 dollars i
think we could do better than that so
what we're gonna do is we're gonna go to
our vpn and set our location to london
united kingdom and now let's go to
google and type in current location to
see where my computer thinks i am
oxfordshire that is the most british
sounding place i've ever heard of in my
life just saying that gives me a craving
for crumpets so obviously the browser
thinks i'm in the uk right now so let's
go search for flights again when you do
this open a new incognito window just to
make sure you don't have cookies from
when you searched in the u.s all right
so we're gonna search phoenix to london
again tuesday may 10th one way this is
the exact same thing except it thinks
i'm searching from the uk and as you can
see those two flights are 486 british
pounds 486 british pounds is 623 us
dollars so just by pretending to be
british we saved 30 bucks on our flights
how about that and usually when i do
this i search from both my country the
country i'm going to and then a few
lower income countries throughout the
world like maybe the philippines india
mexico because sometimes airlines will
make flights a little bit cheaper for
lower income nations just to help drive
sales there it really just takes some
experimentation but as you can see using
a vpn can help you save cash so as you
know there's plenty of sites that can be
used to search for flights a few of my
favorites are google flights skyscanner
and mamondo personally though i like
google flights the best just because of
its layout and a few of the tools it
gives you so when i go to search for
flights the first thing i do is set it
to one way the main reason i set it to
one way is because i just never have a
game plan while i'm traveling but
another reason you should book one-way
flights is because it's actually cheaper
when you book a round trip you're
normally booking that round trip with a
single airline and they'll only show you
return flights on their airline whereas
if you book one way at a time it opens
up a whole new bunch of possibilities
for the return flight which at the end
of the day can help you save if you want
some help finding two one-way flights
you should use a tool called kayak
hacker fare you just put in where you're
going and it'll help you find the best
flight there and back usually on
different airlines to help you save so
now that we have one-way flight selected
we need to input our origin airports you
can actually input more than one airport
what i like to do is put in the airport
code for your first one so jac for
jackson and then you can add more air
force of origin onto there basically you
can put into here any airport that you'd
be down to fly out of so for me that
would be jackson salt lake city denver i
think idaho falls has an airport why not
ogden utah actually has a little airport
rock springs wyoming all right so as you
can see i put a bunch of airports in
here that i'd be down to drive to
that'll make things way cheaper because
it'll look for more routes for more
places which just exponentially makes
map go and then what most people would
do is just put in their destination i'm
no boring person who knows what my
destination is the world is my oyster
whatever that means what i'm gonna do is
i'm gonna go down here and tap on this
map and once you're on the map you can
see all your origin airports and pink
right here and then you see the rest of
the world and look at all these places
there's a big world out there folks and
this is seriously how i find my next
trip like you know you just gotta kind
of see what's cheap like oh look at that
guatemala city is mighty cheap right now
and up here i didn't really specify any
dates we'll worry about that later i
just put a trip in the next six months
but let's say i want to do trip next
month i just select may and the great
thing about doing it this way is you
learn about all these places that you
didn't even know about i mean look at
this place antigua and barbuda i i
didn't even know that was a thing all
right looks like we're not going to
tobago we'll see what we got going on
over in africa we got egypt for 746 i'd
be down to go fight some mummies we got
an island called sal niger i barely even
know her so anyway that's how i use
google flights but you're not gonna find
the best deals by searching that way in
order to get the absolute cheapest
flights you're gonna need to track down
what are called mistake fares so a
mistake fair is when an airline makes a
silly mistake and gives out a super
crazy cheap deal because of it this can
be a result of the airline just hitting
the wrong button or having a currency
conversion issue or giving the new guy
too big of a job on his first and last
day but the thing about mistake fairs is
they're not up for long because airlines
will catch their mistake and fix it
before too many people can book that
crazy cheap flight the most a mistake
fare will ever be available for is like
maybe a couple hours the good news is
that there's companies that monitor
mistake fares and are able to notify you
when they arise my favorite site for
catching mistake fares is scott's cheap
flights so scott's cheap flights is a
deal hunting website that not only helps
you catch mistake fares but also just
looks out for the best deals from your
airport year round and helps notify you
when they arise so just looking at some
of the deals flying out of salt lake it
looks like we got a flight to suriname
for 200 bucks that's really good i would
love to go suriname i mean there's a
bunch of people speaking dutch in south
america that's that sounds like a party
we got a deal to dayton ohio don't know
why i'd ever want to go there i actually
have family in ohio make sure to keep
them in your prayers i mean there's
nothing wrong with them they just they
live in ohio and scott's cheap flights
isn't the only site that does this
there's a bunch of other really popular
ones like airfare watchdog and
cheapair.com there's also a ton of
really good social media pages you can
follow to help you find cheap flights my
favorite for salt lake is flights from
home which just looks for deals
throughout the year coming out of salt
lake i mean look at this one we got
santiago chile for 580 round trip out of
salt lake that's like super good and the
next trick i have for you guys is make
sure to include a stopover on your next
trip so a stopover is just a layover
that lasts more than 24 hours maybe even
days or weeks instead of going to your
layover city and then the final
destination all at once you stop in your
layover city get out go explore have a
good little trip there get back to the
airport and then do the rest of your
trip it's basically a way to get two
trips for the price of one i mean think
about it you're flying to two places why
not explore both of them iceland air
actually has a program that'll help you
arrange a stopover in iceland on your
way to or from europe for absolutely no
additional charge so as you've probably
noticed i spend a lot of time in central
and south america and i feel like every
time i fly down there i have a layover
in panama city and copa air has a
program where you're able to get out in
panama city and explore there for as
long as you'd like before continuing
your trip no extra charge or anything
and panama is really dope so definitely
take advantage of that another airline
that does the same thing is fiji airways
and they offer a stopover in fiji and
route between north america and
australia there's a bajillion other cool
stopovers out there like abu dhabi and
turkey so if you want to learn about
more of them go to the site
airwander.com and that's a site
dedicated to helping you find stopovers
similar to stopovers another way to get
more destinations out of your trip is to
use budget airlines in foreign countries
all over the world there's budget
airlines you probably haven't even heard
of that offer only the bare bone basics
a lot of these airlines don't even show
up in search results for things like
google flight so in order to book with
them you just need to go straight to
their website here's a list of budget
airlines in each region of the world so
take a screenshot of this save it on
your phone next time you're in one of
these continents make sure to bust this
out the great thing about budget
airlines is with them you'll be able to
visit different countries within a given
continent for almost nothing check out
this example on ryanair so if you were
in ireland and then wanted to check out
another part of europe you'd be able to
go from dublin ireland to bucharest
romania for only 16 bucks do you know
how far that is that's literally the
other side of europe i feel like bad
taking that flight i'd be like giving
the flight attendants tips like is this
like a slave labor situation are you
guys actually getting paid for this and
there's tons more like that some even
cheaper especially in asia all right i
got one more tool to tell you guys about
and this one's kind of controversial
it's still technically legal even though
airlines frown upon it and there have
been multiple lawsuits surrounding this
issue and the tool in question is
skiplagged.com so skiplagged is a site
that kind of exposes a loophole in
airfare pricing what it does is it finds
hidden city flights and what a hidden
city flight is is it's when you book a
flight but instead of flying all the way
through to the final destination you get
off at the layover and that's your final
destination you don't complete the full
flight that you vote and you might be
asking me how in the world does this
save any money it sounds like you're
actually losing money by not taking the
last leg of your flight wouldn't it be
cheaper just to fly directly from your
first destination to the one you're
trying to go to but hold on a second
that'd be all too simple alright so
let's pretend you needed to go from
boston to houston that sounds like a
horrible trip i don't know why you do it
but in this situation you got it so that
trip from boston to houston is priced at
240 usd meanwhile there's another flight
that goes from boston to orlando and it
has a layover in houston and that flight
costs 180 the reason for the price
difference is that boston to houston is
seen as a business path whereas boston
to orlando is seen as a recreation path
the airline knows that the majority of
people flying from boston to houston are
big businessmen who are going to houston
to close on the deal of the century
they've got the money to spend on an
expensive flight and they are not afraid
to spend it and the orlando flight is
going to be lower because the airlines
know that this is going to be mostly
families going on vacation and they're
not going to want to break bank going to
see a big mouse so the purpose of skip
lag is to find those flights where
getting off at the layover is cheaper
than just flying directly there the
crazy thing is airlines hate it so much
that skip lagged caught onto this
loophole that united airlines literally
sued them luckily they lost the lawsuit
and you can continue to bamboozle
airlines at their own game using this
site so yeah that's about it happy
flying man i am loving this setup i mean
i got my tiny home studio all set up i
got my fairy lights back here let me
know if you want to see more videos like
this i will happily spend more time in
my tiny home talking to y'all about
travel seriously just put in the
comments what other topics you'd like me
to talk about but yeah that's about it
i'm gonna go eat more cookies bye no no
no this is not like the last video i'm
not gonna hit my head on that thing this
time let's leave
oh dude
you
