welcome to math with mr. J in this video
we're going to discuss how to find or
calculate an average and the average is
a number that represents the typical or
central value for a data set now you see
that there are two lists of numbers or
data sets on your screen to the left we
have number one and to the right we have
number two so we're going to go through
and discuss how to find the average for
those two at the top of your screen in
blue you'll see the steps we're going to
take in order to calculate the average
we're going to add up all the numbers
and then divide by how many numbers
there were in that data set or list of
numbers so let's jump right in to number
one so for number one on our list of
numbers starts with an 8 and we actually
have a list of nine numbers there so the
first thing we need to do is add up all
nine of those numbers and once we do
that we get a sum or answer of 72 so we
again we added up all nine of those
numbers once we add them up we divide by
how many numbers are in that list or
data set and we have 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
so we do 72 divided by 9 and that gives
us an average of 8 now it worked out to
be a whole number
you will also get decimals when
calculating averages so let's take a
look at number 2 so we have an 80 75 96
80 to 90 187 and a 70 so the first thing
we need to do is add up all of those
numbers and we get a sum of 581 now we
need to
five by how many numbers there are one
two three four five six seven so 581
divided by seven will give us the
average and this one actually turns out
to be another whole number 83 again when
you're calculating averages you will get
decimals that's okay
so that's how you find or calculate an
average add up all of the numbers and
then divide by how many numbers there
were thanks so much for watching
until next time peace
