Need up to 30 seconds to load.
hey guys and welcome to today's video
where i'm going to be filming
for a week my new baby leopard gecko so
you get to see us
interact and how maybe it gets used to
me maybe not how it's doing
feeling and everything um so what i
haven't shown you
is obviously if you've seen the last
video when i got the gecko
um i bought it home let it settle
throughout the day then i handled it in
the evening and then gave it some
mealworms i gave it 10 mini meal worms
i counted five out um this morning that
i hadn't eaten but at the same time some
male ones might have escaped into their
hair so i'll have a look later
uh tonight i'm gonna feed it obviously
again um but one thing i wanted to
change
this is actually during the day um it's
just quite dark so i've had to put my
light on
is although i have this water dish that
will you know it will do the trick
um i kind of wanted a more gradual one
because the gecko is
so small so i've got this one it
actually looks massive it's one of the
smallest in the shop but every time i
put something in here there's a gecko
it's like okay that is massive
um so yeah i'm gonna leave it for the
rest of the day and then we'll return
a little later also last night i weighed
it and it was six grams
so we'll wear again on friday and see
what it weighs
[Music]
if you just do this with your hand they
usually will settle their kind of
see it as a warm hide so they'll scoot
against it
uh but during the day you're not gonna
see much for a june day because i do
leave
them to it like the rest of my geckos i
just let them sleep throughout the day
i do pee pin through the tank just now
and again to see
that they're asleep on the heat mat like
usual um
but yeah most of the activity occurs at
night
[Music]
it's okay
oh that is a chunky grub
[Music]
but basically today i cleaned out the
tank
so usually every day i take out the bit
of paper towel that has a poop on it
um but today it just needed an overall
clean just because you could see like
where it's been hunting the bugs certain
juices on the
paper towels so i had to get that off
but handling wise what i keep doing
pretty much every day is the same so
i don't disturb it throughout the day in
the evening i come and handle it a
little bit later i feed it
so um handling wise it's going really
well of course
it is fast and jumpy and um
sometimes it settles but it's completely
normal because
frankly if you had a hatchling that was
lethargic
didn't really move very quickly was an
alert that would actually be quite bad
um
so the fact that the gecko is alert is
fast
has energy is good it means you know
it's got that survival instinct it's
probably healthy
um if it was lethargic or slow not
really reactive
there could be something wrong with it
or maybe your temperatures aren't
correct
but this is a good sign okay so don't
think you're doing something wrong don't
think your gecko hates you you know at
the moment you could definitely be a
threat
um so they have to be alert but i think
every day if you do this
five or ten minutes they start to
realize actually you're
you're okay it takes a while
but it will work out and
throughout this whole week i have been
doing my
sound that i do to all my geckos just so
it gets used to that
so whatever sound you sort of make to
get a cat or dog to come over
you know if you're like that's sort of
the sound i'd make to my geckos and they
all know that sounds so i'm starting
early with this one
um but yeah it's doing really well like
i think the majority of the time it's
how you perceive the behavior so if you
see it running away
you've seen it running across the tank
when you go to handle it you might think
oh my god it hates me
it still does the exact same to me but i
just know this is normal behavior
completely understandable it doesn't
hate me i mean
it might be a bit scared me but it will
soon realize
i'm not a threat i thought i'd show you
what sort of setup i've got going on
here
when i am like handling the gecko
um and also just what i've got next to
it so he
she they um actually ate all the
mealworms last night so i took that out
last night put that there
tongs spare paper where i write down
what i fed them
a laser thermometer because it's really
good backup to have one of those and
just check the temperatures
and also over here on my computer and my
chest so
i'm close enough to the tank that i can
easily put them back um obviously at
first you might want to handle them
over the tank until you feel a bit more
confident and then if you have a chair
nearby you can sit down
and handle them like that look
oh that's a little munch that might be a
big munch for you actually
it's mainly fluid
i was just curious to see if i could
hand feed so i got a wax one pupil which
is like
90 fluid and it's
you know it's a fan i know previously
i've said that you have to wait till the
geckos are six months old before you can
give them a wax swim and that is
actually a role that i stuck to with all
my other geckos
but i don't actually think that's a rule
um
and i know this one's had wax worms as a
part of its meal growing up
so yeah
[Music]
so just before i started to record the
gecko is actually hanging out of its
hide so i think it's anticipating
food which is a really good thing um one
thing i forgot to mention
is each day i take out the bit of paper
with the gecko has pooped on
i think it's just good to know to remove
that um
but once again we are going to be doing
a feeding session
[Music]
so today's thursday and the video
announcing the arrival
of this gecko has just gone up and a lot
of people have requested i make a video
like i'm making right now but also
around handling um so i want to show you
it
as much as i can so i thought i'd sit
down again today
and just show the handling aspect of
things now every time i go to the tank
um the gecko does sort of run about like
who are you what you doing don't pick me
up and i think a lot of the time
um i get comments like my gecko wrote
about the hide how i'm
am i meant to pick it up and honestly
you do just have to move the hide
the only thing i'd say is don't move the
hide like during the day just to look at
the gecko
if you're gonna move the hide do it
because you want to you know check on
the gecko in the evening
to handle it to feed it um so i try to
limit
the amount of stress um but then i just
sit here
and handle it for a bit now handle oh
jesus
did you see that i feel like when i'm
quiet for a bit and suddenly talk it
freaks it out
now handling can seem a bit
you know crazy because a gecko doesn't
seem to have any sense of direction or
self-preservation it will just sort of
run everywhere
honestly it's easier when i'm not
recording and not talking because it
doesn't spook the gecko as much
but i did just want to show you yeah it
they are quick but
i can guarantee if you're in a situation
like this and you're thinking i've got
you know maybe 20 years of this like i
can't hold this gecko it's
really fast and flighty um they do
they do calm down trust me so this is
like the point where
your gecko is going to be the quickest
and jumpiest
um and also it feels so fragile because
it's so
small but just keep doing your hand to
hand if you're
feeling like it's maybe going a bit too
fast for you then bring it back to
yourself so it can walk up like your
hoodie or something or what your clothes
um also it's handy if you have someone
else with you because
if it goes on your back or in your hood
or a pocket or somewhere you can't reach
it's just handy to have someone there to
look out
because they're so small so fast i can
get everywhere also i know people gonna
ask where this hoodie's from
it's from a shop from years ago i don't
think they make them anymore
but it's not my merch or anything but
it's a cool leppa gecko hoodie
also tomorrow is way day so obviously
when we first got it it was six grams i
definitely think it's gained weight
like it's eating really well so that is
good to see
um when you first get your gekku there
is a chance it won't eat on the first
night it might not even poop because it
wants to find a place it feels safe
i was quite lucky that it did eat a few
meal ones they did poop um the
biggest thing i can give you like the
biggest tip i can give you is
leave them to settle in it's okay to
handle them in the evening but just give
them the whole day
to sleep and settle in i do that every
day
but i think it just helps reduce the
stress also this room's so quiet like
it's left during the day like obviously
i pop in here on my computer and stuff
but
it is our house in general is quite
quiet so this room is really quiet
um if you have your new gecko in a busy
like living room or something it might
take a bit longer to
you know get relaxed um but the best
thing you can do is give it some peace
and quiet when you first get it
so today is way day now as i said
last friday they were six grams i'm
gonna guess
they've gained about three grams this
week i have also decided that
once it reaches about 11 grams i might
move it into
the actual vivarium because when minnie
and gizmo were 11 grams that's when they
were able to come home with me and they
went straight into a vivarium
so i'm predicting about eight or nine
grams today but we shall see
so the gecko is eight grams so kind of
expected to be honest
eight nine grams yep that's pretty good
going so
i think give it another week
maybe two and then we might have moved
the gecko into
the vivarium by the way this tub is what
milwarms came in
and yet it looks massive um so
i hope you've enjoyed this week of
course the same's gonna go
this evening i'm gonna hand a little bit
more i'm gonna clean out his poop
i'm gonna feed it um so same sort of
thing
but you know what back in february we
took on a rescue puppy
and compared to that like looking after
a baby leopard gecko is so
easy um it's partly because i am used to
it though so
you know don't feel bad if it has been
tough on you it's quite an adjustment
especially if it's your first reptile
but my goodness what a difference but
anyway i hope you've enjoyed today's
video i will of course try to document
more parts of
keeping a baby gecko if you have
specific video ideas you want to see
let me know below and if you're not
subscribed already please do and if this
video helped
please give it a like but um
yeah thank you for watching guys and
[Music]
goodbye
you
