hello everybody i'm mark welcome to our
channel
in this series of videos we're showing
you how to raise rabbits for meat
and in this video how to hand feed baby
rabbits
how to hand feed baby orphaned rabbits
last week unfortunately we lost our
mother
aldo and uh the babies were only two
days old when they lost their mother
um it was late on a saturday evening all
the shops were closed
that uh she had died i went out and
tried to buy some goat's milk
on the sunday and the rabbits weren't
too keen on that
and i didn't have a good syringe um to
feed them
so i went to a pet shop monday morning
and i bought a
kitten replacement milk the milk that i
bought
is called lactol and as i said it's a
kitten replacement milk there's a link
in the description
if you want to see where you can get
this and
i've basically been feeding the babies
three or four times a day
um i tried to make it quite thick
because
a rabbit's milk is the most calorific
milk known to nature and that's why the
rabbits grow so fast
some people do add whipped cream
non-sugared whipped cream
to the cat replacement milk but i've
just
been making it thick and feeding them
three or four times a day
and they seem to be doing well they're
all funned at two days old they're now
six days old
they're seeing to always have nice
bellies and nice and full
and they all seem to be getting livelier
and stronger
and so i'll show you how it's done
okay guys here are the orphan rabbits
and we'll start off with this uh
checkered rabbit
one tip i uh found on the internet was
that you're supposed to
use a damp cotton wool ball or tissue
paper
and stroke the genital areas of the
baby rabbit and that's to mimic what the
mother rabbit does
to tell it to either defecate or the
food is coming
you can either wrap them up in a towel i
like to use uh
kitchen towel paper so i can dispose of
it afterwards
the hardest part i find is getting the
syringe
in its mouth in the first place so what
i tend to do is now
is just pump a little bit of the milk
out of the end just to get a droplet
place it on the rabbit's mouth and
hopefully
it senses that the milk time is ready
and it opens its mouth for me to start
feeding
you've gently got to prise the mouth
open ideally from the side because the
teeth are at the front
and once open i just um
just put a couple of droplets in at a
time
you can't put too much milk in all in
one go
because there is a chance that you can
actually kill the baby
by drowning it you can fill up the lungs
so once the syringe is in the mouth i
just tend to
push the plunger down just ever so
slightly
give it a little break before doing the
next one
and i find particularly if the baby's
very hungry
i can get rid of all the milk in one
feed
i initially started off with three or
four
feedings per day of three mil
they're now six days old and i've gone
up to
four mil and every couple of days i'll
increase
how much milk i'm giving them
fingers crossed and keep all six alive
i am forewarned that um you do
lose quite a few but
patience is a virtue and during lockdown
we've got a lot of time
i'm sure i'm going to get attached to
these rabbits
and i can't see me dispatching them for
me
we'll probably keep two for breeding
does
and try and find some nice homes for the
others
as pets
after feeding them i just like to uh
wash off any of the milk just by using a
wet uh
kitchen towel and then make sure they're
nice and dry
afterwards there we are one down
five more to go
i'll leave links in the description for
the
milk that i'm using and also for the
syringes
which again i bought in the pet shop and
they're designed for feeding
orphaned animals hedgehogs rabbits
guinea pigs
