I did how to feed 75 people for $70
last Monday Monday Monday and everyone
wanted to see what I ended up with and
how I get it so today I'm explaining how
to feed 75 people for $50 because I know
your wife is good at grocery shopping no
you couldn't make Robin go that far I'm
really bad at picking out hair stylists
but I'm really good at grocery shopping
so which is which is better I don't know
it's a toss-up about that because Mike's
nose I'm just telling a parent I eat it
okay so uh let's see what did I learn I
learned that I could have done this feed
75 people for $50 and I'll tell you how
I did that so here's kind of what I
started with so let me show a picture
what I started with so this is what I
started with and I just had it all out
on the counter and I did the video $75
or 75 people for $70 so everyone asked
what I ended up with so here is what I
ended up with so this is before I left
home and I made a hundred and fifty
cupcakes let's see how many did I get in
each pan 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 20 24 26
28 so I made a hundred cupcakes sorry
because I did three pans of those
basically because I made some and left
some of them at home
so what I did was I had one pan of
cupcakes for each night which was
basically one box mix that I got for 30
cents it was Halloween cupcakes and I
added sprinkles cuz of course you don't
want to take colouring cupcakes to BBS
that is not knobby
so I think put in some sprinkles and
then made blue frosting and then they
turned into regular funfetti cupcakes so
that's what I did for the cupcakes lit
in the back on the bottom layer you can
see two layers of cheese now I got way
too much of some things and I'm gonna
explain that in just a minute but first
I'm going to go through what I have on
here so I have three kinds of cheese on
the bottom back there I have mild
cheddar Monterey and then Colby and
Monterey and I laid out the slices
I had the deli guy sliced them really
super thin and they had a chart where's
our face
we've lost her face um they had okay
there we are good so at the deli they
had a chart and I should have taken a
picture of it and he said well what size
do you want well I didn't know I wanted
my cheese to go as far as I could so it
was between one and ten and I had him do
number one and I got about a hundred
slices out of each block of cheese now
that was good because I got a lot of
slices it was bad because it was 95
degrees that day and on the 15-minute
drive from our house to the church some
of the cheese kind of not really melted
but it just kind of stuck together
because it was so warm even with the air
conditioner on just walking from the
house to the car the Sun just warmed it
and all those really thin pieces of
cheese kind of stuck together so next
time what I would do is probably a
number three slice which is a little
which is double the thickness that I did
so I would probably do that next time
so if you're doing this yourself I would
get it don't get the thinnest sliced
cheese you can get and what I did was I
had him take the blocks that I purchased
just from the back of the store and the
deli sliced them for me so that's one of
my tips now on top you can see I've got
on the top middle I've got a pan of
strawberries and grapes and then on the
bottom right corner
I have strawberries and grapes and then
there's an empty spot I cut up a
watermelon and put in those spots the
day of so I added that all the fruit
just disappeared I mean everybody ate
all the fruit but even at that I still
had a huge bowl left of strawberries cut
up to refill that they didn't eat so I
bought too many strawberries awesome
and then in the top let's see top right
and then the bottom middle is the ham
and the Turkey people on Facebook for
just second about somebody being a hater
well thank you guys actually the haters
help us because if you guys yellow them
it shows Facebook Facebook shows our
live stream more so it actually helps us
so thirsteee haters please feel free to
yell at them all you want because it
actually it helps us when those crazy
people get on there and you guys yell at
them because then it's Facebook shows
are like more because there's more
comments and more likes and more thumbs
up and all that
so anyway sorry little off-track there
but that does help us so comment all the
way comment away I'm happy like Oh
Catherine is asking what was this large
meal for so I help me we should we
explain okay so I sort of got myself in
deeper than I had planned so they needed
food for Vacation Bible School and my
friend asked me she said would you be
willing to raise the food and I'm like
sure thinking a pan of
these or two or something and um she's
so I said okay then a couple days later
she said okay can you feed we'll have
you do Tuesday and it's feeding
seventy-five people okay not quite what
I'd planned but then she went on to say
all you have to do is take some deli
trays okay I can pick up some deli trays
that's fine it's been pretty stressful
I'm tired but I can do that well then I
get an email a couple days later that
says oh yeah and we need to do it for
under $100 preferably under $75 and I
was like okay I'm frugal but I'm not a
miracle worker and they wanted a meat
tray cheese tray popcorn fruit and
vegetable tray so that was a lot so I'm
explaining how I did that Monday I
showed you my haul when I bought
groceries you can go back and look at
that video so anyway so back to my foods
um we thought this didn't look like very
much once it was made but in the end it
we thought this didn't look like very
much and it was made but in the end it
ended up being more in the end I ended
up fixing too much food and I'm gonna
talk about that in just a little bit
that's how I could have done it for I
could have said actually 75 people for
50 dollars and well there's not gonna be
a next time but if I ever had to do this
for like my niece's graduation party
next year or something who lived we have
custody up um then I would know how to
do this so anyway um that's what we're
doing sorry I didn't explain that very
well um then I put for the meat
I got some sliced ham and sliced turkey
and I cut them in half and we layered
them in those two in the middle and then
on the back right I have cut up broccoli
red and green peppers and cauliflower so
here's the deal on all the foods
first of all I made I purchased way too
much food
and what's not shown in here is I also
have crackers that I bought to go with
all this and I did make some popcorn and
let's see was that it yeah and that was
it so I added popcorn and crackers also
that I didn't have room to display here
so what I did was I set it up and this
is how I had it set up and we had some
extra buns from the fourth of July
picnic that we use for if people want to
make sandwiches the church just had
those leftover from our church fourth of
July thing you can see here is my ice
pack in the bottom left I managed to
smash my finger loriel and I still have
a scar from it so anyway that was what
that's what that little weird stuff is
in the corner and then em we also had
some chips and salsa and then I added
some popcorn so those three things the
popcorn the crackers the chips and salsa
four things I guess and the buns we
added that I didn't have on my original
think so
what I noticed was someone told me to
put the stuff that I had more of in
front so that's what I did on the last
night because I had more vegetables than
anything so here's what I noticed first
of all I would use what I did was I took
and figured the servings that were on
the box and I just did one per person so
like on the crackers it said 16 servings
so I just took that and got my 75
servants to figure out how many boxes I
need it well I kind of messed that up
because what I did was I got Club
crackers and I got Ritz type crack
records both generic and I'm not sorry
and um what I made this
sorry so I get my little hat in the cane
and do a little bit sorry so um what I
did was I bought seventy five servings
of both those crackers and what I should
have done was bought seventy five
servings of them together so I could
have gotten half the amount of crackers
and the same is true with both the meats
I got seventy five servings of ham and
seventy five sevenths of Turkey and what
I should have done was that seventy five
servings together so I could have cut my
meat in half also and then I messed up
and I don't eat well I know why I wasn't
thinking cuz I was tired I wasn't
thinking but I have chronic fatigue
syndrome in fibromyalgia um and so I
bought broccoli and peppers and Colour
flour for the vegetables
no one hardly touched the cauliflower at
all they ate a little bit of broccoli
but everyone ate all the peppers well
what I should have done and I know
better but I should have gotten carrots
or cucumbers so that I messed up on why
well cuz I put nobody likes cauliflower
see I like color fires so it didn't
occur to me that nobody else likes color
for its kind of like I love liver how do
you feel about liver nothing fun of it I
don't think so
that was my mistake I should have used
cucumbers and carrots instead of
broccoli and cauliflower and then let's
see what was the other thing so for my
serving sizes so if you're doing this
for a big crowd or over make sure if
you're getting like two meats or a
couple of different crackers or whatever
get half of each so or whatever divide
it so like if you have three kinds of
crackers
then only get 25 servings of each does
that make sense in my making sense
sorry it was okay you're he's gone he's
monitoring comments nevermind I think I
made sense um
now after I did all this as I was
standing in the deli waiting for my
cheese to get sliced which took about 20
minutes because I had it cut so thin and
he did care if it was five blocks I
think for me of cheese after I did all
this I was standing at Walmart and I
looked up and I saw the tide or said
just get a sub sandwich and I had
totally spaced looking into this when I
went to Walmart because I had fully
intended to and I just went straight in
to my buying groceries for this and I
look up and it said feed 30 people with
the six-foot sub for $32 and I was like
are you kidding me that would have been
so much easier I just was slapping
myself in the head um so I learned that
whoever those of you who gave me the
suggestion to do the subs thank you I
wish my chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia
brain would have registered it because
it would have saved me a lot of work and
so next time if I do this I will have uh
sorry Jack Jenkins here come here Jack
come here
here stand here Tara stand over my dad
stand there okay
so Jack hold up your sign all up your
sign so yours jack hold up your sign
he's sending me messages come close to
Quincy okay so you just held up his sign
what does it say you wanna clap circle
how many of you had okay you know one
more than anyone um sorry and keep
having messages in between here from the
kids um so who was it just asked me how
long it took Audrey Audrey takes me all
together so here's the deal I didn't do
this by myself
I hauled all the kids in here because
there was absolutely no way I could have
cut all this up and all that for myself
so I had Emily Ellie David and Jack me
so five people cutting up fruits and
vegetables and meat for this so I'm
trying to remember David and Jack and
Emily worked on the grapes and
strawberries
and it took them about 20 minutes 20 to
25 minutes for the three of them Jack
did all the grapes and David and Emily
did the strawberries so took him about
25 minutes Ellie and I did all the meat
and the vegetables and that probably
took us about what not quite 20 minutes
probably 15 minutes then on the cupcake
baking I had all these cake mixes that I
had bought and no one in my family is
eating cake or cake mixes now Mike and I
are gluten free
our daughter niece is vegan and our
daughter is trying to cut down on sugar
and it's three boys and even them
they're not eating I'll make a thing of
cake and like a third of it I'll get
eaten so the kind of lay out on the
counter in that I'll have to blow the
gluten-free things yep
so um I spent probably two hours total
making the cupcakes but it wasn't all
work time I mean that's how long it took
me to bake I wouldn't borrowed muffin
tins from the neighbour coz I only had
one and so I got two more so I had 3
tens going at once
and it took me two hours but that wasn't
working the whole time you know I mixed
up the batter poured it in baked um took
him out the importer mint so it wasn't a
full two hours so I would probably say
actual work time about thirty or
forty-five minutes and then on popcorn
we made all the popcorn it took me about
15 minutes for the popcorn there is no
way I could have done all this myself
I'm just too sick and actually mom and I
are gonna do a video on this about
making things easy in your life so like
I learned my lesson on this one I won't
be doing this again I'll be going and
getting the sub sandwiches and making
those next time I mean it's just it was
a lot of work and I was very tired but I
have to say everyone was very
appreciative they really appreciated
everything they thought it was great
they couldn't believe that I was able to
get all that done and quite frankly uh
and if it was the middle of some if it
was not the middle of summer I wouldn't
have been able to do it for 50 dollars
because you have to do this stuff in
season so um that's pretty much yeah
how I fed 75 people for fifty dollars
because we had a lot of luck no really
you did it for 70 but you could've died
yeah but I mean I'm counting it as $50
because I'm gonna actually be buying
some of the crackers and stuff from the
church cuz they reimbursed me for it but
I'm gonna buy some of the crackers from
the church so I'm actually gonna spend
about $50 feed the 75 so yeah my only
thing was I bought too much meat and too
much cheese and I should have done
carrots and cucumbers instead of
broccoli and cauliflower so those were
the main things that I learned about
this whole process this is the first
time I've ever done anything like this
we don't have big parties
I don't do big celebrations I just had
two kids graduate from high school but
it was non-traditional so we just had a
little tiny party for the family but
so I don't do big parties and stuff like
that so this is my first time we have a
couple people asking us to remind them
of the topic is so it's so the topic is
it's a follow-up on Monday I said how I
fed 75 people for $70 and today I'm
talking about how I actually fed 75
people's 50 dollars and what I did and
how I did that so that's what I'm
talking about
so Jenny asked what kind of VBS Vacation
Bible School um this one was a seed
theme I can't remember what it was
called but anyway it was all beachy and
seeds and stuff like that and this was
the food for the adults workers not for
the kids so yeah I came to church on
Sunday and asked the children's pastor
if they decorated for the enchantment
under the sea dance let's see so what
people are saying they're hungry
Stephanie says was a submerged theme
yeah it was actually actually a lot of
people are saying you did great work
Rocio says he did great work you did
great more work but I think it's better
than just buying subs and a couple
people had commented that with the subs
so many people are not eating bread or
whatever that they were thinking that
might as well okay yeah so what I would
do with the subs
yeah I cuz I get it we're gluten free I
get all that and a lot of people don't
do bread what I would have done with the
subs is bought the one that feeds 60 so
bought two subs to feed 60 people and
then bought a package of meat and cheese
and maybe gluten-free crackers and then
on top of that bought some fruit for
everyone and that's how I would do it
next time if I did it which probably
won't but plus I'm just really feeling a
lot better so well one thing I think you
sort of hinted at it but I don't think
you only mentioned is that they didn't
make it overly complicated the operation
for all the stuff that the BBS
and partly needed we deal with these
things you wouldn't simplify as much as
possible because the complexity if it's
just too complex it's unnecessary amount
of work did you get the pizza example
well yeah I mean and I understand why
they're doing it but I guess and partly
it's because I'm sick so so being
chronically ill so he has to do I have
to conserve my energy and I cannot take
extra steps and I mean it's literal to
the point where it really annoys me when
Mike put this puts the salt shaker from
the stove into the cabinet because some
days I'm just too tired to open the
cabinet door for that extra step to get
the salt shaker out so I leave it
sitting on my stove when I use it so I'm
really into conserving steps and that
kind of thing but like like tomorrow
they're planning on doing pizza and I
said well where you getting your pizza
from and they said Papa Murphy's we're
gonna cook it ourselves and I said well
Little Caesars has it already cooked why
don't you just pick those up then they
said well we want it to be fresh well
it's only about I don't know a mile and
a half two miles from Little Caesars
it's not far at all and it would still
be hot by the time you got there and so
things like that I would because the
oven isn't that big it would take about
I think and so stuff like that I would
kind of simplify it and conserve and
actually mom and I are gonna do a video
as soon as we can get Skype going which
Mike worked on last night for two hours
trying to get it to work but there are a
couple of people like Denis so we're
saying more people should have helped
and about giving the the job to you the
CFS person but a glass you didn't do all
the food for everyone and also they see
it is kind of hard to comprehend for
people that don't really know so what
happened was I only did it for Tuesday
and Wednesday night I was the person for
Tuesday Wednesday night but what
happened was originally they told me it
was just going
be picking up deli trays from the store
I didn't know I was gonna be making all
this and there is no way I could have
picked up oh that was my point to
remember there was no way I could have
picked up deli trays from the deli
counter for this price as a matter of
fact i sat and figured and for
everything that I did it would have been
close to $300 so um
yes I'll put my cable around see that
look in Mike's face for the video
producer in him um Julie asks are you
going to do it again next year no I
won't um and that's it I mean I she I
agreed to take the deli tres and I
didn't know I thought I was just going
and picking up some deli trays I didn't
know that I was going to be doing all of
that and so for me this is a live and
learn thing also I'll know next time to
specify and I'll know not to volunteer
to do that I'll volunteer for something
else but I won't I don't have the energy
to do that so I wouldn't do that again
but um he's Big Bear homestead tilt on
your best tuck I don't see a lot of
questions a lot of comments about more
people should have helped Oh Maurice has
cut tortilla wraps in half or less ways
some people are talking about using
things like tortillas and so bread all
right so yeah instead of bread for stuff
to use tortilla wraps things like that
and yeah Maria I did put out lettuce or
if people wanted to do a lettuce wrap
instead of buns and let's see yeah so
does anybody have any questions about
how I did this or any thing he says I
went to a party took a huge tray of
chocolate eclairs they were awesome and
spent ten bucks for a tray and for the
tray and eclairs oh that's a good idea
okay well we're getting your questions
up there let me do a little uh a little
odd moment we have all of our books on
sale
this week not all of them we have our
four books they got a debt
penny-pinching mama quick and easy menus
and menus on a dime these are all 50% so
if you're wanting our print books grab
them
we are not reprinting these shipping is
too hard on me and I'm not going to do
it anymore so these once they're gone
they're gone you will not get them in
print evokes dining on a diet I only
have 150 copies left and we're trying to
decide if we want to reprint or not we
may go through another company or
something but it is not on sale but it
is way worth the price I mean you more
than save I have had customer after
customer say how just in one shopping
trip they say just from the recipes and
tips it here so yeah good deal so big
bears back things speaking of lettuce
wrap have you ever heard of watermelon
pork tacos let's be interesting
I hope he's joking I don't know actually
there were a number of people that asked
there were a lot of people at Murray and
Opera among them asking if you'd put
lettuce out for rats I did put lettuce
out for wraps for people who didn't have
the buds I forgot to mention that I
guess there's a lot of things I forgot
to mention sorry guys but that's what
happens he says don't worry about books
I'll put that link on the second yeah
we'll put the link on there for the
books it's living on a dime calm click
on the store if you're on your phone
just click says click here to buy our
books at the top of the page at living
on a dime calm so just click on that and
I'll put a link in just a second
yeah Sharon says I'm healthy and I would
have found this dumb ting you always
impressed me though creative you are
thank you sure in yeah I I was pretty
overwhelmed but I do good in crisis mode
I do well for crisises I don't do well
dealing with everyday things like having
to fix dinner again I don't do well how
can you do the laundry again I don't do
well this but like when our daughter got
hit in the head with a golf club and
split her skull open
that's calm I grabbed honey we do do
really well I grab
wash rags so she wouldn't see the
gushing blood and threw it on her head
till he could get to the hospital and I
do very well actually when I'm under
pressure it's the rest of the time yeah
Jenny was just asking if we have a small
church body why would they ask you know
you're ill I think the thing is we're
we've only been there a couple of years
and we're just getting the point where
we're really connecting with people yeah
and it's kind of like I was married to
Tyra for 10 years before I really
understood what it meant to be
chronically sick and I know that sounds
nice but the reality is you know that's
a slicer
if you don't know what you're looking
for it's hard to tell how you know when
she is sick and since we're just kind of
getting to know the people I don't think
they really realize that and because she
thought it was going to be a just
picking up and delivering something
that's what I thought it was gonna be
well I think because she said yes she
kind of felt like she really wanted to
get it done and so since she was able to
requisition the kids
yeah and David did help me I went and
set up and my oldest or my middle son
went and helped me set up and everything
and so and I we had help setting up and
all that so yeah Denise what do the kids
eat so they made different they're
making different themed snacks for the
kids so like the first night what was
the first night they made they were
talking about Noah
so they made rainbow layered fruit cups
so they took all the different fruits
and made a rainbow out of the fruits and
then the second night was about Jonah in
the well so they took bananas and put
two chocolate chips for eyeballs for the
whale and vanilla wafers cut in half for
fins and then they put it on a bed of
ylim out of bed but they put down some
blue frosting for water and stuck the
banana on top of the blue frosting so
like the whale was on the water and then
last night they did jello with Teddy
Grahams for a bear walking on water
because Jesus was walking on water so
and then tonight
I don't know what the theme is but I
they were they took little square
pretzels that have the little you know
yeah the wofully looking pretzels and
they put some chocolate yeah they put
some chocolate with a fish on there so
I'm thinking the theme is something to
do with fishing or maybe feeding the
five loaves or something I don't know
what what the theme is this evening but
anyway yeah good that's what is the best
which is the best cook with dividing um
this one right here dining has 1200
recipes and tips in it this is your best
deal and this is the most practical of
all of them the quick and easy menus
here this is just fast meals this is all
the meal plans and the recipes together
but this is only fast meals we're so
we're talking like 30 minutes or less
dining has stuff like how to make
homemade bread how to make tortillas how
to make homemade seasonings how to make
popsicles how to make do how to make
mashed potatoes iced tea all those
basics how to cook things summon
encyclopedia and a lot of it is fast
yeah yeah most of its fast and we have
vegetarians ask all the time are there
vegetarian recipes no but if you're
vegetarian only 40 of the recipes have
meat in them and they can easily be
adjusted so like the chili you can use
beans instead of hamburgers so things
like that Maria says memory says best
deal on dinners for diamonds how much uh
so dining so dining on a dime this one
here is 20 195 yeah that one's 20 95 for
the print or the or the e-book is 14 95
and we can't ship out of the country I'm
very sorry we tried it was a huge fiasco
they have seen our books at the border
especially in Canada and we didn't
realize to a lot of years later that
there's a law that prevents us from
shipping
that are not Canadian in the Canada and
then for Europe in Australia the problem
is it costs $35 to ship one book over
there so it's just not even financially
really feasible so I've got a few more
questions there's a coupon code dining
on a dime it's not on sale the other
ones are 50% off but dining on a dime
isn't and no you don't have a coupon
code might just went in and changed just
changed the dining unfortunately isn't
on sale because we only have a hundred
some copies left and so we figured we
didn't want to run them completely out
if we can avoid so this says I could see
Canada from my window I could hook you
up we have a lot of Canadians so anyway
yes some Canadian we have some Canadian
friends at church and we thought about
Steve they said you're single
Marie says kiddos might like it if you
could use spinach wraps for the green
color and roll up ham and cheese and cut
segments and lay them out weekly like a
caterpillar like on pieces of Mayo fries
Joe's an awesome filler yeah it does t
Lynn says the adrenaline rush helps in a
pinch yeah that's my problem I go on
adrenaline and then I collapse and so
yeah so if you have any other questions
give me a shout out real quick um
actually we are trying to work on the
Kindle version we have two Kindle
versions of some of the books dining on
a dime because it's so huge we don't
have one yet
but we were thinking we actually hired
somebody to do it and they realized that
the job was bigger than they thought and
I have been able to do them in the past
it would just save me a while so what we
are going to move in that direction
what happened was we wrote the book I I
wrote the book mom wrote the book in
nineteen between 1997 and 1999 and what
happened was the programs are outdated
and we pretty much have to go through a
read write the whole thing and I'm just
not up to it so yeah yeah so anyway um
is let's see uh where can I send the
recipe to Big Bear homestead are you
serious
okay he says that there's a what was it
watermelon pork tacos okay send the
recipe to me at living on a dime calm
there's a contact form on the top right
they'll contact me and you can send it
to me at all the messages come straight
to me
so if you hit the contact for me you
have any reason to contact us everything
comes straight to me so you can and I
just may have to do that one on the air
and see what it's like that would be
pretty good Glenda says I wish you could
see a couple of recipes in the excerpt
instead of just the recipe list Oh is
that on me oh you mean to test the
recipes you mean for me to she must mean
for me to show how to make them yes
we're gonna start doing recipes we're
trying to get the live streams
stabilized first before we get into the
harder stuff like showing recipes I
think it might be a reference to trying
to evaluate the book because the dining
sale page has these are some recipes
that doesn't say it doesn't actually
show the recipes oh well that's because
we have like most of the recipes are
recipes on the site so like at least
half to three-quarters the recipes are
for dining on a dying and we put on our
posts when they're from dining on time
so you can just kind of browse through
our recipes and see if there's something
that sounds good on the website there's
a tab at the top it just says recipes
