after introducing solid foods to your
baby the next stage in weaning is to
familiarize your baby with harder
textured foods to help improve your
baby's chewing skills
in this video you will learn how to do
so
also we will demonstrate how to help
your baby learn other feeding skills
such as self-feeding and cup and straw
drinking
we will also share ways to encourage
positive meal time behaviors
the development of chewing will expand
your child's food repertoire
and is an important skill to develop
from six to seven months of age
you may start off by offering your child
hard meltable solids
as part of chewing practice
they are food that soften with saliva
some examples include puffs
yogurt melts
and baby biscuits
you may also gradually introduce lumpia
solids as soon as your child is ready
usually from 7 months onwards
it is important not to delay introducing
lumpy foods as it can cause feeding
difficulties later on
as your child's chewing skills improve
with practice
you may progress to mashed and little
soft food
cut into small pieces during meal times
some examples include soft fruit well
cooked pasta and scrambled eggs
cup drinking can be introduced to your
baby between 7 to 8 months of age
begin by offering small single sips
initially expect spills at first but
repeated practice will help your child
learn
apart from using a cup you may also
teach your child to drink from a straw
at eight to nine months of age
start with a short and thin straw
again offering your child small single
sips
as your child progresses you may use any
straw bottle
here is a summary of solid foods and
feeding skills you can expect your baby
to develop from 6 months to 1 year of
age
baby feeding milestones 5 to 6 months
spoon feeding a runny smooth puree
6 to 7 months spoon feeding of thick
smooth puree
chewing of meltables for example baby
biscuits that melt
and self-feeding of finger food
seven to eight months spoon feeding of
thick lumpy puree
chewing of meltables and cup drinking
eight to ten months
spoon feeding of mashed food
chewing of multiples
soft table food
cup drinking and straw drinking
10 to 12 months self-feeding via spoon
and continual refining of skills
resulting in an increase in variety of
tastes and textures accepted
after one year of age you may use a
moderate amount of salt and seasonings
to prepare food for your baby
be sure to provide a balanced diet to
meet your baby's nutritional needs
having family meals together is also
encouraged as it introduces your baby to
a variety of tastes and textures

please understand that it may take up to
10 to 15 tries for your child to accept
a particular food
always encourage your child and avoid
false feeding
you should also model positive meal time
behaviors
avoid the use of mobile devices
storybooks as well as the television
encourage self-feeding by cutting up
food into smaller pieces so as to make
it easier for your child to use hands or
utensils
heat meal times to a maximum of 30
minutes
we hope these tips will make meal times
more enjoyable for you and your baby
