How to explain low GPA in grad school SoP or Personal Statement | Grad School with low GPA

hello and welcome to this video i'm dr
ochio
and today let's briefly talk about how
to explain
a low undergraduate gpa
in your statement of purpose or your
personal statements
for your grad school application now
there are different school of thoughts
when it comes to
if you should or should not explain a
low undergraduate gpa but
trust me if you have a good reason for
it um the people who
are going to review your application are
human beings as well who have emotions
so if you have an a genuine explanation
you can
you can present it in your
statement of purpose or your personal
statement
and what i'm going to focus on today is
how you should
word that particular excuse
and adequately justify
why you are a better student
right now for consideration
uh for that grad degree position but
before i continue you should know that
this video will be
like a supplement to the series of
videos that
i have presented on this channel
on the statement of purpose writing
an effective statement of purpose i will
link the videos
on the screen right now if you've not
seen them please do that
and apart from that in a previous video
one of my very old videos um i explained
the different ways you can
uh set yourself up for admission and
funding if you have a low gpa i think i
presented about five or six
ways in this video right here so you can
check that out

out so let's get right into it now for
this video i'm going to use an example
of a student
from nigeria who had a an especially low
gpa a thought class that's what we call
it in nigeria
um but um still secured
a master's degree position and
was funded throughout her study so i'm
going to use our example for
this particular video now like i said
earlier since
people are going to review your
application uh humans
you want to try as much as possible to
appeal to their emotions
and tell them how well you are now
suited
for a graduate degree position in their
university
now i'm gonna use this example and
you'll see how these students
in just two sentences um
explained how she is now well suited
for a graduate degree position
now the unfortunate loss of my mother to
breast cancer complications
in my sophomore year took a severe toll
on my undergraduate
academic journey well i recognize that
my
undergraduate gpa alone may potentially
make me less competitive
my gre scores had my achievements
in courses research and teaching during
my post-graduate diploma
program are better reflections of my
true
abilities and utter determination
to continually improve
now if you've seen my previous video on
what to do if you have a low gpa
or if you go to my instagram page like i
said to look at
the points i previously mentioned these
particular students did
a couple of things here
first the individual did a gre
and also did a postgraduate diploma
and like i said in that video you know
diplomatic masters in your
uh in your country of origin or
somewhere else
before you now apply to the united
states
now this uh i mentioned a couple of
other things that you can potentially do
in that video so here you can see in two
sentences the first sentence explained
what happened during his second year in
the university
right now you should
do this this is a good reason why you
know this is
a reasonable reason why you might feel
maybe uh maybe down at that time and you
couldn't concentrate
and that led to you know the a decline
in your gpa
that's understandable and we should be
able to see this clear pattern
on your transcript now if your low
of gpa was caused by
maybe no reason whatsoever i mean it
will it will appear on your on your
transcript because
your low grades will just appear
randomly
uh on your transcripts so
in that case you might not have a great
reason to
you know put here and if you don't have
that um
great reason that's important reason for
your low gpa what i would advise
is to just leave out the first
sentence and just include the second one
um if you want to and in some cases some
people just
don't do that but if you don't try to
explain your low gpa what will happen
what will likely happen is if they have
a lot more students who are well
qualified
uh than you they'll probably not
think about you know going forward with
your application because you didn't
justify why you had this low gpa
so if you have a reason for that
included if you don't
don't bother uh including that reason
just go to why
you are now a better
fit for this graduate position using
something related to the second sentence
that i put here
now you may ask where should i put this
on my statement of purpose or my
personal statement
now in the video that is displayed on
the screen right
now um i i'm going to link
a video series on the statement of
purpose please see that video
and if you are going to use this format
or any other format whatsoever
this would be included somewhere around
you know the section
or the paragraph where you are talking
about your undergraduate
experience um yes achievements and the
challenges that you have
so this this will fit right into that
section but please if you have a reason
a low gpa
try as much as possible to at least
tell them if you're not gonna give a
reason why you have a low gpa
at least tell them why you are
now a good fit for
admission and um whatever funding that
is available
now i didn't make these videos for you
to plagiarize
um i'm just making this to serve as a
guide
for people who might have
might be in this condition and still
strive
for a graduate degree position so please
don't read your rights
if you have to plagiarize this even
after giving you
this kind of guide then you probably
don't deserve
at that position so uh just use this as
a guide
to you know construct your own sentence
that fits into your own situation okay
