hi everybody this is fox nomads and
today i want to help you travel smarter
so have you been shopping for a new
Apple product like an iPhone or a
MacBook Pro you may have noticed on
their website that there's a buyback
program where you can send in your old
device and get a couple of dollars off
of your new purchase and it seems like a
really convenient way to save on your
next Apple purchase but you might be
wondering how it all works and whether
or not it's worth it so using the Apple
buyback program is pretty
straightforward when you purchase a new
Apple device so if you've got a new
iPhone it's going to ask you if you
already have an existing iPhone so let's
say you've got an iPhone 6s and you're
upgrading to the iPhone 11 Pro it's
gonna ask you what kind of device you
have you put in iPhone 6s it's gonna ask
you how many gigabytes it is so if it's
the 64 the 128 model and it's also gonna
ask you what kind of condition it's in
it's gonna give you a couple of options
from excellent good and so on and then
it will give you a price so for example
this iPhone 6s 64 gigabyte model Apple
will give you back $100 right now the
original price of this 6s was 649
dollars so you're getting about 10 or
15% of the value of this phone back but
you got to remember that this buyback
program only works when you're getting
another Apple product so if you get the
iPhone e 11 Pro which starts at 999
dollars and this hundred dollars of this
6s is like a 10% discount if you get the
iPhone 11 if you get the 64 gigabyte and
it's about a 13% discount if you send
back this iPhone 6s so why does Apple do
all of this it's pretty obvious because
you can only use this buyback program
when you get another Apple product so
what they're really doing is encouraging
you to buy more Apple products and if
you are an apple person so if you're in
the Apple ecosystem and you upgrade your
phone often or you know you're gonna get
MacBooks for life then a buyback program
like this makes sense make sense for
Apple and it makes sense for you as well
there are a couple of advantages aside
from getting a little bit of the money
back on your existing device Apple can
recycle that material you don't have to
have a whole bunch of a graveyard of
phones around in your apartment so there
are a lot of advantages both for you and
for Apple when it comes to the prices
that they give back
you know ten or fifteen percent off on a
new phone is not a bad deal
especially considering something like
this iPhone success is about five years
old so that's a pretty good deal for a
buyback program there are the websites
you can use to sell back your old iPhone
or your old mobile phone but the prices
that Apple gives you on the buyback
program are pretty competitive and it's
really really convenient so when you
make that purchase when you go to the
Apple website you buy your new iPhone
and you say you're gonna send back your
old one you've got 14 days to send it
back Apple after you get your new phone
is gonna send you a box which is a
prepaid shipping box which you get you
put in your new iPhone you've got to
first turn off Find My Phone and a
couple of other things that Apple says
on their website that you've got to do
but it's basically turning off Find My
Phone you can even wipe the phone after
that if you want which you probably
should you just put the phone in the box
send it back to Apple and then you'll
either get an Apple gift card or if you
paid with the new purchase with a credit
card
Apple is gonna refund the amount that
you give back in the buyback program to
the original card that you use to buy
the new iPhone or the new MacBook or the
new whatever Apple product you just
bought it's really convenient you've got
14 days to send the phone back they'll
even send you a reminder a couple days
before that expires so it's all pretty
seamless which is what you would expect
from Apple now they do mention a couple
of things one that the phone is not
modified at all
so if you've changed the battery in your
iPhone 6s for example or in your old
iPhone I don't know if that won't count
for the Apple buyback program Apple is
kind of inconsistent with that some
people who've replaced their iPhone
batteries have sent them back to Apple
no problem and gotten their refund
others have not so that's something to
note when you do send something back and
they don't accept it they don't give you
the original price back don't know if
they send it actually back to you wasn't
able to find any information about that
but in most cases if you're accurate
about what you've done with the iPhone
if you're accurate about the condition
you're gonna get that money back either
as a gift card or on that original
credit card that used to make the next
purchase so the Apple buyback program
gives you a decent amount of money back
for your old phone to a new phone or to
your old laptop to a new laptop it's a
really convenient process you know how
much they're gonna give you back before
you even send it
back so it gives you a little discount
on your new phone about 10 to 15% off on
a new phone for example in most cases
for the oldest phones and for MacBook
Pros it's about 30 to 35 percent that
you can get back on your next purchase
so all of that said is the Apple buyback
program worth it well it comes down to a
couple of things so let's start with the
phone so if you're looking at getting a
new iPhone if you're the type of person
that changes your phone like every year
or every other year then the iPhone
buyback program makes a lot of sense
because you're gonna get back more of
the worth of the phone for your next
purchase it's basically a discount that
you're giving yourself about 30% off on
a new phone if you get your phone very
frequently if you upgrade that thing
very frequently and that 30% off is
gonna add up over time and given that
percentage can mean a couple of hundred
dollars off a very expensive new iPhone
then it does seem to make sense for most
people now if you've got an older phone
like a 6s which is probably going to be
discontinued this year I think it's
probably gonna get the next iOS update
so this phone is probably going to still
get updates for the next one to two
years but right now this 6s is the
oldest phone that you can send back to
Apple so if you've got an ax phone
that's really old so it's really on the
edge of basically apples buyback program
and sending it back might not make as
much sense if you really need that
hundred dollars back with that hundred
and fifty dollars back then of course
you should send it back to the buyback
program but I'm guessing that hundred
dollars is not going to make much of a
difference for you if you're buying a
new iPhone e 11 Pro which is $1000
hopefully that you have enough money to
pay for the iPhone 11 pro $100 is not
gonna make or break your bank there are
advantages to keeping an old phone like
this if you travel very frequently so if
you travel to places where there's a lot
of street crime or you know that there's
a lot of pickpocketing going on then it
makes some sense to have our old phone
around that you can just take with you
and that it won't be the end of the
world if you happen to lose it or gets
stolen there are a lot of places in the
world where people do carry two phones
so they've got the phone that they use
when they're going out to certain parts
of the city and then the other phone
when they're more confident about their
surroundings so in that case the phone
an older phone like that can actually be
an advantage
you can also use it as a gym phone so
obviously you can use your new phone at
the gym but there's something about
having an older phone that you don't
mind if you drop it or if it gets wet on
or if somebody like drops on very light
weight on it you get what I mean it's
kind of nice to have an older phone that
you can use and not have to worry about
quite as much you have children for
example you can also use the older
iPhone for them as a child protective
device so you can set the settings in
iOS for kids they can use it basically
as an iPod so there are a lot of
advantages that you have by keeping an
older iPhone if you're only gonna get
$100 back for it the nice thing about
all of this is that Apple products do
tend to retain their value very well so
that's good if you are in the Apple
ecosystem and if you use the buyback
program you're probably going to be
staying in the Apple ecosystem for a lot
longer so in short for the older iPhones
it probably doesn't make sense to send
these back because you get a lot more
value out of keeping an older phone
around but for frequent upgraders then
the buyback program seems to make a lot
more sense you get a lot more back in
terms of a discount on your new phone
and if you know you're just going to
keep upgrading every year or every other
year and you're gonna save a lot of
money over a long period of time same
thing with the Mac books it tends to
make more sense because they hold their
value longer over more time so a 5-year
old MacBook Pro you're gonna give back
about 30 to 35 percent
on a new MacBook Pro let me know if you
have any questions about the Apple
buyback program down in the comments
below and while you're down there hit
