hello everyone its Dave a lot of people
were asking me to organize another PD to
help them understand how to use the new
iPads in the classroom it's hard to
organize a PD because it takes time and
then not everyone can make it there so I
figured I'd put a video together and
answer some of those questions and offer
a few tips that maybe you didn't know
and the students may not have known so
it's going to make for a better use of
the iPads in the classroom the teacher
told me only a few days ago that there
was a unanimous decision throughout the
class that the students preferred using
regular books for studying than iBooks
they'd rather highlighting those then
you use the iBooks on the iPad
there are disadvantages the iPad
actually is designed with studying in
mind
iBooks especially is designed for
studying it has advantages that a
regular book simply can't provide and it
offers a productivity that you really
can't get from any other experience so
this video is going to be about the
advantages of iBooks both purchased by
books and also PDFs alright so let's get
started iBooks okay so first things
first open up the book you want and
you're gonna be taken to the title as
you probably already know you can flip
through the pages just like you can clip
through a book at the top of the right
hand corner you're going to be able to
see a small and a large
a here you can make adjustments first
thing we're going to do is we're going
to change it from that harsh white into
a sepia one night mode I really
recommend this because this is much
easier on the eyes the sepia makes it
seem like it's paper next to seem a
little more genuine and the night mode
is not only handy for when you're
reading in complete darkness but it's
also a lot easier on the eyes and there
also are some beliefs that night mode
can assist with dyslexia so there's
we're going to keep incipient mode'
tapping the small a will make the font
smaller whereas tapping the large area
will make the font larger pretty
straightforward up the top as the
brightness bar it's not changing
anything right now because this is
actually my iPad projected onto my Mac
so it's not looking like it's different
but on my iPad it is changing in case
you prefer a different font you can
change it to that right here I'm going
to leave it there
I don't mind it and down the bottom is a
new feature called scrolling view with
this view it eliminates pages and it
makes it one continuous page that you
just scroll down I don't like it
I feel like it's like a toilet paper
roll just unraveling but you know that's
me it's up to you do what you want I'm
going to set it back because I don't
like it now I'm going to go back to the
front page and we're going to work on
what I believe is the most important
part of iBooks and that's taking notes
so what we're going to do is we're going
to highlight some of this sentence just
hold it for a second and then slide your
finger across just not too fast if you
turn the page now let's highlight a
different sentence by tapping on the
Highline you pop up with a little menu
and if you can click on the colors you
can change the color of the highlight
now let's add a note to this highlight
the little bubble there you type in
whatever you want
okay now if you tap away there it's
popped up right next to the highlight if
you tap on that little box the note
comes right back up now let's try
something else
what if you highlighted something Agis
always somewhere random in the book and
then what if you lost your page in a
regular book that would be a problem
because you'd have to skip through the
entire book flipping through pages
trying to find a way to get back to it
but iBooks just considered that if you
go to the top left hand corner right
next to library is little icon hit that
here it's going to take you to three
tabs
you've got your contents that's going to
be really handy by itself next week
you've got your bookmarks we haven't put
any bookmarks in yet but we can do that
later I might do it just after this and
we also have notes all the highlights
are here in the one place and not only
do we see what we've highlighted but we
see segments of the sentence that is
highlighted from so we can actually get
some context also the listed in not the
order that we highlighted them but the
order that they came in the book so hit
resume it'll take you back where you
were
now let's scroll somewhere else at the
top right hand corner the very last icon
is the bookmark hit that go to another
page
get it again jump back to the menu take
a look at bookmarks there they are by
tapping on it it takes you straight to
that bookmark the same thing will happen
if you tap on a note it'll take you
right there
all right now we're almost done now go
to collections at the bottom of
collections it's going to say new
collection click that let's put in
English in the library itself you can
create categories for what you're
studying in what area and there's no
excuse to lose anything so I've got of
mice and men in my PDFs I'm going to hit
edit and then I'm going to be able to
select a document or two or three or as
many as you want so I'm going to select
a nice and men I'm going to go to the
top left hand corner hit move slide all
the way down to English there it goes
here it is
now I'm going to go open of mice and men
this is a PDF not an iBook so it's
drastically more limited it doesn't have
a whole lot of the features that the
other one does have but it is still
handy so you can't actually highlight
like you can in an iBook you can select
text like you could anywhere else you
can copy paste you can define so if you
make your selection down to just one
word it define just like anywhere else
on the iPad it'll give you a dictionary
definition
you can adjust the brightness you can
still search so that's a handy little
tool and you can still bookmark but the
little button up the top left hand
corner that in an iBook would give you
contents and bookmarks and notes now
simply grids the pages so you can scroll
through faster and also maybe find your
page quicker so when it comes to a PDF
it's really just for reading PDFs aren't
really that great they're really no
different to having a book in your hand
or simply an a4 sheet that might be an
assignment paper they're in the main
benefit is that you can search words
within it you can bookmark pages and you
can also select copy paste text you can
also make Syriac reader to you if you
highlight it and select speak she'll
read you the text Syrian I have a
complicated relationship so there it is
iBooks if you liked the video if you
found it helpful give me a little thumbs
up down the bottom if you want to see
more videos like this I might make some
more if they're going to be helpful then
hit subscribe and you'll be notified
when they pop up and if you have any
questions leave me a comment and I'll do
my very best to get back with the best
answer I can all right see you
