hey guys welcome back to loose garage
today we will be bench testing starters
and the reason this starter is out of my
truck is because my truck does not start
anymore and I'm convinced just through a
little different troubleshooting that
done that is the starter so the point of
this video today is to show you how to
bench test these to prove that they are
indeed not functional anymore or have
issues and then what I'll do is show you
the comparison with a brand new one and
how much nicer that is so we'll first go
down you know pretty basic tools that
you'll need to do this safely obviously
the biggest one is safety glasses cuz
you're dealing with you know electricity
and hooking that up to test these out
the next thing you're going to need is
some sort of automotive battery jumper
cables and a jumper for the starter to
jumper your 12-volt constant to your
ignition posts so what we'll do is I'll
go through setting up all these how
these are supposed to hook up on these
starters so you can test them so the
first thing I do is I have a set of
jumper alligator clips and I hook one up
to the main 12-volt constant post like
so and then I set the other one to the
side when I am ready to use this and
make the jump what you'll do is you will
want a jumper to your 12-volt your
ignition wire so every time you turn
your key it sends a signal to excite
this solenoid which kicks are started
over so I'll set this to the side for
now then you want to take your negative
of your battery terminal and then you
also want to take the positive of the
battery with your jumper cables and we
will hook that up here like so and then
it is ready to go we are hooked up in
our battery and so safety glasses on
what I want to do is
so slightly just goes together and you
could hear it excite the motor what I'll
do is turn this unit around so we can
see how its functioning now for a look
at the actual motor engaging
[Music]
I don't know zoom in if you guys can see
it but it's kind of bouncing around the
motors floating a little bit at the gear
and it's not supposed to look like that
and I'll show you on the new starter how
it's supposed to look but I'll zoom in
to show you a little closer view of what
is going on it just sits there bouncing
around the whole time that's enough for
me to know that this motor the starter
motor isn't working properly it's very
similar to the the noises that I was
hearing on the vehicle when I try to
start it so I will hook the new starter
up the exact same way I've got this one
I'll show you the difference the brand
new starter is ready to go we have all
of our wiring hooked up and so we will
make the connection
see how nice that is much much nicer
much smoother the gearing doesn't bounce
around I'll show you one more time up
close
[Music]
yeah I like how that looks so what I'm
gonna do is take this all apart I'm
going to show you guys on a different
video how to install this starter and
also how to remove the starter but this
video is just to show you how to bench
test it so yeah pretty straightforward
pretty easy
again just wear your eye protection be
careful making your connections you can
also take a rubber handle a screwdriver
of any sort and just lay that flat
across there and it will also make that
connection as well
