Need up to 30 seconds to load.
do this before you lose your data whilst
hard drives are not crashing as much as
they used to they can still become
corrupt apps can and do freeze messing
up your work and of course you can get
hit with that ransomware heck you can
even accidentally delete your own files
only to realize weeks or months later
that you actually needed those now so
many people simply use cloud storage to
dump their data whilst this is
convenient it certainly isn't cheap it
isn't feasible if you have a slow
internet connection when there are large
internet outages you can't even access
your own files and of course there is
that whole privacy issue of who can
actually read your personal documents so
to correctly back up your data us nodes
recommend the three two one rule that is
keeping three copies of important data
on two different types of media and you
store one copy of site so let's start
with the simplest form of backup which
is making a copy of your data to an
external hard drive you get yourself one
of these external usb drives and simply
plug it into your computer now all you
need to do is copy your imports and
folders and then go and paste them onto
that external drive this is simple but
you have to remember to regularly backup
your hard drive and it seems like not
everybody is really good with this whole
remembering thing the nice thing is that
windows has a free backup tool that is
built into windows 10 and windows 11. so
in your windows 10 right click on the
windows icon at the bottom click on
settings and then you want to head down
to update and security
when that pops up click on the backup on
the left hand side and here it says
backup using file history since this is
the first time we're doing it click on
add drive and there is that usb drive
that you've just connected to your
computer select that nothing seems to
happen until you click the more option
button and over here it says well i
can't back up until you tell me how
often you have the option to be backed
up every hour every 10 minutes or even
as much as daily but let it do it
automatically for you now keep my
backups how long do you want the backups
to be cared for i leave mine as forever
however if you're running out of space
or you only need them for a short period
of time select one of the other options
and it will simply override those files
as it's needing more space here are the
files that it's going to be backing up
and of course you can add more files you
can exclude files and then when you're
ready hit the backup now button and
that's pretty much it from now on as
long as that hard drive is connected
your backups are going to happen
automatically now if you do nothing else
from this video please make sure you at
least set that up ideally you want to
get two of these drives so that you can
keep swapping between them in the event
that one fails you've got a secondary
copy now speaking of failed hard drives
and large data many people now have
multiple computers and phones so you
want a way to back absolutely everything
up and that's when you need a naz a
network attached storage device now if
you have an old computer simply laying
around the house not being used you can
use software like truenas to create a
system that automatically backs up all
your data from all your computers around
your network let me know in the comments
below if you want me to show you how to
do that and make your old computer
useful again now if you don't have an
old computer simply laying around you
can buy a nas device i personally use a
nas from synology and with both these
options you set it up install the
software on your computer and it
automatically backs up your data so
what's the difference between an
external hard drive and a nas device
well an external hard drive is great for
backing up one computer if you want to
back up another computer you're going to
have to remember to remove it from the
first computer walk it over to the
second plug it in and then run the
backup doable yes of course it is
convenient
not so much and as has several software
and data management advantages as the
entire is actually built with the sole
purpose of running your backups one of
the biggest advantages is that you can
set up your hard drives inside the nas
to back up to each other if your backup
hard drive fails your data is still safe
on the second drive or the third drive
or the fourth drive but we are not safe
yet we still need to keep our data
offsite why well because if you keep all
your backups at home and something
terrible was going to happen like a fire
or a burst water pipe or your computer's
got stolen well there goes your data
including those backups so keeping a
copy of data of site ensures against
that if you're using the two external
hard drive methods we spoke about
earlier well a simple solution will keep
one of those external drives at a
friend's house or a family member or
even in your car just as long as not
everything is kept in one location
obviously a more convenient way will be
to back up to the cloud like google
drive or onedrive or dropbox etc and
with windows 10 and windows 11 one job
is actually built right into the
operating system and if you're already
paying for a microsoft office 365
subscription you're going to get one
terabyte of data for storage so you
might as well use it but which cloud
provider can you actually trust with
your personal data who is not going to
access your files well i've got an
entire video right over here about how
to do that who to trust how to encrypt
your data or you can check this video
out here that youtube thinks you should
watch hit the head down here to
subscribe and i'll see you in this video
or this video or i'll see you in both
let's go
