hey guys welcome to camp gurus so
excited to have you here
I made a post a while back and I may
have offended a few of you I apologize
if I did but it was talking about people
in the RV parking lots and campgrounds
not being able to back of trailer and I
kind of hit a nerve with a few of you
because you're new to this and I
apologize for that so I want to make it
right with you and help you with a few
tips that I've learned over the years in
learning how to back a trailer learning
how to pull a trailer a few things like
that so I hope this will help you the
first thing we're going to talk about a
little bit right now is the biggest
mistake people make is not getting their
truck and their trailer in one solid
line before they do anything before you
backup even if you have to pull forward
an extra 20 feet it's worth it because
when you start to create your angles
you're starting from a straight point
instead of being already offset and
that's the biggest mistake I see now
sometimes that's just not possible I get
that but ideal scenario is get
everything lined out straight now what
we're going to do here is we happen to
have a little bit of snow right here you
can kind of see so what I'm gonna do is
I'm gonna pull up where I need to to be
able to get myself to come down this
line right here and get in this parking
spot and that that's not going to be a
scenario that you're gonna see very
often but I think it'll get my point
across on how to get under your trailer
where to turn where not to turn a little
bit now another thing that's really
important is you can see on this truck
I've got extended mirrors this is a
43-foot RV not everybody's gonna have
that they're gonna have smaller and very
rare is that ever bigger than this so I
think this will give you like worst case
scenario at the same time something that
you can really start to work with so
let's go get in and like I said right
now where I'm setting if you come back
from this angle and you look at what's
going on which I can't really see from
inside my truck but if I started backing
from where I'm at right now and tried to
make that
there is no way on planet earth that's
gonna happen okay there's no way I'm
gonna be able to get myself underneath
it to be able to get there so remember
sometimes you need to get out and look
at this now this has the capability on
the back to have a backup camera on the
back of it I don't have that hooked up
right now but you can see you can do
that some RVs have that if they do have
that and you have it in your truck by
all means take advantage of it you've
got to see what's behind you that's how
you don't run over a picnic table a kid
whatever it might be
make sure your area is clean where
you're gonna back if there's obstacles
in your way you guys take your time
there's no rush and backing this thing
up or get somebody out there to help you
alright so here we go
so the first thing I already know like
we said is I'm not in position
right now to back in that so I'm gonna
try to get myself into position now I
don't have anybody here helping me right
now today I've got somebody filming so
they'll be able to kind of watch a
little bit and you can see that I'm
already on a hill now when you're on a
hill like this you guys know I'm going
to drop down so I got to watch those
jacks on the front of this and what I do
is I have tinted windows on my truck so
I always bring my windows down so I have
a really good visual and that way if
somebody yells at you you can hear them
it always is crazy to me that I watch
people they can't hear they can't see
that I mean they can't be helped if they
wanted to so as soon as I start to drop
down it's gonna bring my trailer up
which is kind of gonna make me in an
awkward position now two things to think
about here first of all let's say this
was really muddy if it was really muddy
at this point I'd want to put my truck
in four-wheel-drive because if you don't
you're not gonna be able to go slow and
move yourself the way you want to
alright so this should give me a pretty
good space I can see where I'm at here
so what I'm gonna start to do is if you
can see and I'm gonna have the
videographer come up here to the front
but right now if you look at my wheel
it's straight so when I go to turn my
steering wheel I want you to show you
just a little bit of move of what I'm
doing okay I'm only gonna move my
steering wheel that much to start so
right here is straight
I'm gonna go to right there now the
reason I'm only going that far is
because that gets my truck to start to
move very little what a lot of guys try
to do at the beginning when they're
starting to back is they go way extreme
which throws everything off everything
in backing is about slow slow movement
and see where things start to move and
correct from there now right now so
don't get in a hurry let's just start
slow watch how so slow I start to move
and watch the corrections I try to make
okay so here we go
I'm gonna go this far now when I start
to back I'll give it just a little fuel
and instantly I want you to see what
starts to happen to the truck the back
end is already starting just with that
much of an angle to move now I know it's
not gonna go enough so now if you look
back at my steering wheel I'm a full
revolution you can see where my turn is
right here because I know I'm not gonna
be angled enough so I've already turned
it that much I'm gonna start again now
I'm gonna see that I'm coming now I'm
back at my trailer right there it's
starting to move okay for the very first
I'm seeing the trailer move now what
I've got to decide is is it moving
dramatically enough to make the angle I
want or do I need a little bit more and
for this purpose I need a little bit
more so I'm gonna even turn a little bit
more and I'm all the way solid turn now
but I didn't start solid turn okay so
now she's starting to come around right
there it's getting dramatic in the way
that my back end is starting to move
right there so as soon as it starts to
get this dramatic now I've got to watch
my side of my bed I've got to watch the
my windshield and I got to make sure
that I'm still gonna be able to get back
underneath my trailer right about there
so right there I got to see if I got to
have a good kink and now if you looked
at my wheels I want you look at my front
wheels I'm in a totally different
direction to follow the trailer a little
bit okay but see how my trailer is still
going back it hasn't it's not gonna cut
back underneath me but I'm still getting
back underneath it so that I can move it
around the corner the way I want now
I've got to come back underneath it a
little bit more keep it turning now I'm
coming back again if you watch my front
wheels I'm back underneath it now
I'm gonna come back underneath it and
now I'm gonna really start to come and
follow the trailer it's gonna let my
truck come back and follow the trailer
so I'm watching this in my back and I'm
watching it in this right hand mirror
because I can't see anything right now
in my left hand mirror I can only see in
the spot of this mirror and by me
looking directly back this way and
seeing the angle I'm at so that's what I
got to be doing so right now I'm gonna
watch that come around start to move it
around some more now I know right there
I can get back underneath there again
keep my angle so it's straight and now I
can start to pressure that back to gets
my truck straight okay so now I'm gonna
try to get my truck back underneath
there now right here is a critical thing
that guys do they freak out at this
point in time now my trailers going
further over to the right when I'm
sitting in the passenger seat then I
want it to so I could back in to
somebody else so the easiest thing to do
right now is what we talked about before
just reconnect pull myself back up and
get myself straightened out as soon as
I'm straightened out now I can address
the situation now if I needed to be
further over to the left then I'd
address that I'd be able to take my
truck make it go to left if I want to
take it to the right I could do that but
I only have to pull up a little ways to
get myself back under control of where I
made a dramatic turn to so I followed it
all the way through I'm back here now if
I need to just back straight up which
will do which I'm in Drive right now
we'll throw it back in reverse then I
get myself straightened out little
movements I can take it right down the
line right so if you look at my front
wheels turn just a little bit I'm gonna
turn back thick just so I can stay with
it so I'm straight now it starts to
connect boom just keep it right even
it's just easy easy moves right and I
can back this anywhere I want to at this
point in time which is little tiny
movements okay so once again now if I
wanted to pull back out here back into
where I was at before I would just pull
up but I would angle more to the left
when I started to pull out of here so if
I had to get in a spot right over here
for instance I'm gonna back up just a
little bit more so let's say I was
coming in and I was gonna have to park
this over on this other side
I'll back myself up and
this is how I would come in so right now
what people think about when they go to
turn is in a car I could make an easy
turn right here I could go up and barely
turn when you've got a big trailer with
you you've almost got to be a big bully
you see how I'm gonna start to fade a
little bit to the left as far as I can
go to the left and sometimes I even have
to go in the other lane to make this
happen right because it's a tight
quarters and I got a big trailer now
look how far I'm going past my normal
turn my normal turn in a regular car or
truck I could have made back there but
I'm never gonna make that with its RV so
I get myself up here a little bit to the
left as far as I can now right now is
when I can start to turn and it's gonna
make the corner the way I want to make
the corner okay and it's going to come
around and it's gonna put me right back
right there I start to straighten it
back out trailers gonna follow me real
easy easy now I've gone too far I've
come back underneath it and then I
straighten it back out right there okay
and then I'm back to the exact same spot
now my trailer is not totally straight
as I started off so let's kind of go
from there so we're gonna back it right
back in the exact same spot we did walk
through the exact same skills that we
just had now once again my back end is
already turned so I'm gonna get it
around just like we talked right there
so I can make the turn as soon as I see
that I'm gonna start to make my turn
once again right there you see the
trailer start to move now I got to
decide if it's enough or if I need to
get back underneath it for me it's not
enough so I'm gonna get back underneath
it right there though I've got to change
I've got to change my whole dynamics
because it's gonna really cut fast so
you got to be aware of that now right
now I'm gonna ease it I'm gonna come
back right there I'm gonna ease it again
and now I'm gonna follow that trailer
I'm gonna follow follow right there I'm
gonna keep following it now I got to get
back underneath it to get my turn then I
got to really start to follow the
trailer follow it around now see how
starting to cut clear over boom all this
would bring it back up
get myself straightened back out to
where I want it to be so I don't have an
issue then pop her back in bring my back
end back over where I want and then I
can just start to go real slow in my
movements and I can back this thing
anywhere that I want it to be
okay now we're gonna go through a little
more of a complicated deal so I'm gonna
show you that if you look over here
you'll see I have my trailer block jacks
and I've got snow so this RV has got to
go back in that kind of a location right
that's where I'm gonna put this because
that's where I pulled it out of so I'm
going to show you how I'm gonna do that
without running over this snowbank right
here and getting myself over and into
position and then I'm gonna move a
couple of those on the on my left hand
side the trailer block jacks
to get them out of the way but here's
how I'm going to do this so you're gonna
see I'm gonna cut over here to the right
because I gotta have some space to make
this turn I'm gonna pull up further than
I probably you think you should I'm
gonna start my turn and I'm gonna make a
real wide see I'm still gonna straighten
out right here straighten out straight
now cuz I know I got to get in that spot
clear over I'm gonna still straighten it
out because my back end has to be clear
over to there so if I just started
cutting my back end would never make it
clear over there by the time I want to
go straight so right here I need this to
go straight so I start to get it
straightened out
I see the blocks I see where stuff's at
now as my trailer still not straight now
it's straight so then I can start to
react to what I want to react to right
so as soon as I can see my other mirror
I can see that I can start to go
straight back and get closer to my deal
I'm gonna be right on that cord so I'm
gonna have to go back there a little bit
but I want this trailer a little more
out of the way when I put it away so I'm
just gonna show you how I do it so I'm
just going real slow making slow
movements like we talked
see I'm not a hurry on anything don't
need to be in a hurry I see that I've
got trailer block jacks on one side I've
got my cord on the other side I'm trying
to miss all of it without getting out of
my truck so I'm gonna bring those right
now on those trailer block jacks on this
side come up
and right there is about where I'm gonna
need it to be so I'll go back check my
back-end because once again we didn't
plug in the backup camera because I
wanted to be able to show you that you
know I didn't have to see everything to
to make that happen but I missed by
everything here come back look to see
where this is at I got a good space
there so I'm gonna be clear if I want to
lay this down to get myself ready and
I've still got plenty of space here to
do my full doubts put my tips out
everything like that and plug my RV back
in so I hope that that gives you I don't
know a little bit of help on just a
couple little things that might make it
easier for you to start to park your RV
we'll go through some other backing tips
some other suggestions things like that
for you but you know and and obviously
let's let's have your comments if
there's things that we need to do better
or show you better we will but that's a
start for you so stay tuned to camp guru
for more stuff like this
